Make this a TV news package. Make the story between 1:15 and 1:30 in length. That’s between 225 and 270 words, not including directions. (Directions are what tell me, for example, who is doing the talking, when you have b-roll, and who is being supered.) Be sure to describe the b-roll. I know that you didn’t literally film anything. That’s fine; just describe the scene in a few words. Format your story for easy reading. For example, use all caps for the directions and mixed case for the speakers, just like the sample story does. Be sure to follow the proper style for television. That is, always start your story with the anchor on camera and then go to the reporter on camera. Also, the reporter should be last on camera before going back to the anchor for the tag. The middle part of the story is your b-roll, VO, and SOTs. Be sure to include two, and only two, SOTs. The SOTs must be from two different sources; that is, single-source stories aren’t permitted. Although I can’t list every possible error, these errors will result in a loss of points:The lack of a summary leadMismatched audio and videoSentences that are too long for broadcast writing. Every sentence that is too long will be a three-point deduction.Leads or tags that are too long or too short. For our purposes, all four leads/tags should be 10 to 12 seconds long.Single source stories. Any story with a single source will receive an automatic 10-point deduction. ANCHOR:Five University of Tampa students volunteered at Metropolitan Ministries in Tampa Friday evening. This sentence contains the who, what, when and where. It’s not always possible to put all four in the first sentence of a broadcast lead. The first sentence must contain the who and the what, but if you can’t include the when and where and still keep the sentence at the proper length then include those two items later.The volunteers helped the organization by sorting through donated items. This is a good nut ‘graph. Now we have a good idea of what happened that evening.Bay News 9’s Ashley Jeffery is on scene in Downtown Tampa. The transition is just right. It tells us the reporter’s name and where she is.ASHLEY ON CAM:Metropolitan Ministries offers help to individuals who are homeless, poor and hungry. Some University of Tampa students volunteered their time there Friday evening. Note how well these two sentences repeat the information in the first two sentences of the anchor lead, but in different words. This reporter lead is a little short—about eight seconds. They should be about 10 to 12 seconds long.B-ROLL: STUDENTS SEPARATING ITEMS INTO BOXES IN THE WAREHOUSE. After the reporter is on camera for a few seconds we transition to b-roll. ASHLEY VO:The students started their day in a warehouse. They separated donated items into piles. Whenever you have b-roll there must be a matching VO.FS, VO CONTINUESThese items would eventually go to one of several places Metro Outfitters, an on-site clothing store For the homelessA thrift storeThe FS is optional, but a nice touch.B-ROLL: CHELSEA KEENAN WORKING This is also well done. We have b-roll of the source whose SOT we’re about to see. ASHLEY VO:Chelsey Keenan was one of the students who volunteered.SOT CHELSEY KEENAN: (SUPER CHELSY KEENAN, STUDENT VOLUNTEER) Note that there’s a super—there must always be a super when you have a SOT—and that the super tells us not only what the source’s name is, but also a little information about her. “I think it’s important to always remember that there are people who are less fortunate, that need your help whenever you can spare a couple of hours.”B-ROLL: STUDENTS CARRYING ITEMS, THEN RESIDENTS AT METRO OUTFITTERS Here the reporter simply repeats what she did above—b-roll with VO, followed by a SOT. Also note how well the last sentence of the VO leads into the SOT. ASHLEY VO:After the sorting was done, the students took the sorted attire to Metro Outfitters. Homeless residents greeted them there. Volunteer Emily Dorso said there’s always a need to help those less fortunate.SOT EMILY DORSO: (SUPER EMILY DORSO, STUDENT VOLUNTEER)“There’s always something that can be done, and until there’s not, I’ll be volunteering.”ASHLEY ON CAMERA:Metropolitan Ministries is currently celebrating its 40thyear. It provides housing for 40 families. The organization also provides about 150 meals every day. This is perfect information for the reporter tag—it’s good to know these facts, but they’re the least important ones in the on-scene, and that’s why they’re in the tag.On scene in Downtown Tampa, I’m Ashley Jeffery, Bay News 9.
