She has a “promised” position for hire at a local hospital based on passing her NCLEX-RN®, which is scheduled in 9 weeks. She was planning on an extensive study schedule for the exam, resuming her daily workouts at the gym, catching up with friends, and not much else for the upcoming months. Her mother has another idea for Morgan. The ladies’ group at her church is in need of an educational presentation and she asks her daughter to provide a program. The church budget allows $500 annually for the group to have outside speakers and the money must be used in the upcoming month or it will go back to the general fund. Her mother knows Morgan could really use the extra income and has total faith her daughter could create a quality presentation; she did several while in nursing school. Morgan is reluctant to take on this request for a variety of reasons. She first wants to know what topic the ladies group has in mind, telling her mother, “I am not an expert in anything.” Her mother does not have an answer, stating, “How about I ask everyone what they are interested in most and will let them know you will provide basic information, rather than from a specialist’s viewpoint?” Morgan states she is willing to go this far with the request. Mrs. Houchin’s ladies’ group is composed of about 30 regular members. Their ages range from mid-50s to mid-80s, with the mean age at 65 years old. She proposes the idea of Morgan being the speaker for an hour-long program next month to the group, and it is accepted with enthusiasm. When a topic for the presentation is discussed, two are ruled out as not meeting the needs for the majority of members; these are long-term care insurance and adjusting to widowhood. The third suggestion is met with full approval: an “Overview of Medicare Services. Morgan initially tells her mother “no way” when she hears what the topic will be; however, the speaker’s fee remains an enticement. Plus, she remembers from her last nursing course, Transitions Into Practice, the instructor encouraging students to begin building their resumes as soon as possible. Volunteering for employee-based committee work, participation in a professional nursing organization, attending continued education offerings, and providing community education were examples shared with her class. So . . . Morgan concedes and begins developing her program. She wants to begin with a history of how Medicare was initiated in the United States.
