They address us as people who are interested in becoming better, in some sense, than we currently are, and who are struggling to do so. How we may raise ourselves (rather than simply being raised by our parents), how we may deliberately develop our potential more fully, are questions to which both Austen and Nietzsche are responsive, and their responses can be compared. For this purpose, consider the chapter in Nietzsche’s book entitled “Of the Tree on the Mountainside.” What does Zarathustra mean when heentreats the young man in the chapter not to“reject the hero in your soul” (page 71)? In order to hold on to the heroic, what does Zarathustra advise the young man to say yes and no to and why? How is this guidance similar to, and different from, the influence that Elizabeth exerts on Darcyin Austen’s novel? In the first part of your paper,then, you should explain how Zarathustra’s education of the young man compares with Elizabeth’s education of Darcy. Be sure to support your interpretation of Nietzsche’s and Austen’s texts with evidence in the form of quoted passages.Which author do you find more helpful in the education of your own longing for elevation? The second part of your paper should reply to this question by referring to a particular experience of yours. Explain why you find that Austen is more useful than Nietzsche, or vice versa, in opening up a way to meet the challenges in your experience.
