Choose one of the prompts below to write your essay. The paper needs to be a minimum of 6 double-spaced pages. This is a formal paper which means it should be written in 3rd person. It needs to be a self-contained document. You need to have a minimum of 5 sources (the book Don’t Panic, can be one.) Make sure you are following the style guide to the letter and that all your citations are correct. Note: below are just questions to make you think & brainstorm. You can discuss other points as well. Prompt #1: Arthur is, ostensibly, the protagonist of the novels, as he is the character the action follows mostly, at least in the first book. However, and especially when considering The Restaurant at the End of the World, this might not be as true as first thought and other characters seem to have more importance, while Arthur might be considered a mere bystander. One such character that could be considered the protagonist instead of Arthur is Zaphod Beeblebrox, who first appears as an interesting rogue, or perhaps even a villain, but transforms into something much more central and important over the course of the two novels. Is Zaphod the real hero of the story? Evaluate Zaphod’s and Arthur’s character development through careful observation and critical analysis. How are they characterized? Is Zaphod evil or just misunderstood? Is Arthur a hapless tag-a-long or is there something deeper at play? Compare and contrast the two, specifically through the lens of Joseph Campell’s theories about the “Hero’s Journey” and come to a final determination, given the nature of a protagonist (the person the action follows), as to who the actual protagonist is? Conversely, and if you have a compelling argument, you may substitute Zaphod for any other character in the novels. Prompt #2: While The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a work of science fiction, it is also a strong example of satire, especially in a modern concept. Explore the satirical nature of these novels and how they function. What parts of society are being satirized? Are there specific people or public institutions that are being satirized? Highlight other modes of satire that are being utilized, such as irony or sarcasm and explain how they are being used to heighten the satire of the works.. How does the fact that Adams’s novels are works of satire affect the meaning you take from it? Lastly, compare and contrast the works of Douglas Adams with Isaac Aasimov’s I, Robot series of short stories (which is a very serious, hard form of sci-fi) and discuss how Adams is satirizing the genre as a whole.Book is attached. Due: Tuesday, May 5th Note: You should write what prompt you used (#1 or #2)
