Choose an example by one of the artists cited below for a short essay…. Be certain to do the week 2, 3, and 4 reading, commentary and quiz FIRST or you won’t have a clue! Also read the content pages regarding ‘common mistakes in student essays’ and ‘subject, stye, from and content.’ If you don’t do that, you will simply not be ready to write this essay and I can’t be responsible. OK?Post the image you have chosen along with your essay. Be certain the image is large enough to be cogently seen. No image no grade.DO NOT not post a link to another site for your essay or image response. This makes it hard for me to grade, and harder for the other students to respond. Please use the window on the discussion page as provided. Essays and/or images linked to to another window will NOT me graded. OK. Each of the artists below have a powerful social or emotional message to convey and each one does that with some real visual kung fu that involves color. In a short, 150 -200 word essay, about a page or so, your job is to select one example by one artist from the list below and tell the class briefly what feeling or emotional state is conveyed by the work, but above all HOW the work’s color and design do the job. In essence, tell the class three things, WHO, WHAT, HOW and then post a RESPONSE to another student. 1. WHO was the artist you selected. A short paragraph of introduction is all you need, but do some homework about the artist to inform your essay. It’s part of your grade. 2. WHAT does the color and design express. A sentence is all you need here, sum it up cogently.3. HOW does the color, hue, value, intensity and design express indignation or sympathy or anger or poetic contemplation or some combination of those things. How does the color support and advance what it expresses? How is the artist’s color and design a unique statement? This is the heart of the discussion. 4. RESPOND to another student post with a thoughtful reply that brings another issue to the discussion. Think of this as a long essay question. There’s no right or wrong answer here, just answers that have been well thought out and those that haven’t. I really, really, really like to see references to ideas defined in your book or in the content modules. Shows me that you’re getting it. I want to see YOUR WORDS, not long passages cribbed from the Wiki or the content pages or from some other place. All student essays are subject to verisite review. Essays with Plagiarized material will be forfeit and the student maybe subject to dismissal from the course. Most students are good honest folks, so this warning is for those few in doubt. fair enough? Short, cited quotes are OK. Please review the choices below and select one. I am also pretty much open to independent student choices, so long as they are suitable to the assignment and vetted by the professor (that’s me) before hand. Paul Gauguin – (Post ImpressionismJorge Camarena – (Mexican Mural Movement)Hans Hofman – (Abstract Expressionism)Paul Klee – (Blue Ryder School)Cezanne- (Post Impressionism) Maxfield Parrish – (American Illustrator)Matisse – (Fauvism)Max Beckmann – (German Expressionism)Mike Mignola – (Contemporary Graphic Art)Giotto – (Late Medieval)E. Charlton Fortune -(American ‘California’ Impressionism)Please post your essay in the window provided below. You won’t be able to see what the other students have posted until you post an essay yourself. After you post your essay you are not done. Respond to the student essay you felt was most provocative. Agree or disagree or otherwise explain your point of view. Respond in a way that brings another critical idea to the discussion, NOT with ‘I like what you said about that guy because of it is the one I picked 2 and it has a lot of detail…’ (Student quote)A good discussion is like a potluck. You don’t just show up, eat all the food and say, ‘that was good….. burp’. You bring something to the table. A good response is a 3rd of your grade so don’t blow it off. 34 points possible for the essay
