As before, create a file and write about 400 words, not much more than 500 words. However, this time, I am asking you to leap forward in time and read a new (brief) reading, and then do your reflection on that reading. The reading is about 11 pages long. It is a work written in the late 1970s, and it is an American work. I believe this brief work does a wonderful job of bringing our course motif, dealing with those who are different from ourselves, up to a period relatively close to our present times. Because it was written during or shortly before our own lifetimes, the way it portrays our course motif is in ways we should be able to relate to closely: racial conflicts, wealthy-vs.-poor conflicts, boss-vs.-employee conflicts, gender conflicts. In turn, my hope is that this reading/writing assignment may help some students in their efforts to settle on research paper topics. This may help particularly with the second paper option, but perhaps with the others also.The work you will read and write about is an oral history written by Studs Terkel, a historian who was famous in the late 20th century for interviewing common people, and letting them tell their stories in their own words. His oral history entitled ‘C. P. Ellis’ is told in the words of Ellis himself, so that the ‘I’ in the narrative is Ellis, not Terkel. Terkel merely recorded Ellis’s words, edited them lightly, and published them in written form.It is the story, told in first person, of how a dirt-poor white man named C. P. Ellis evolved from the ‘exalted cyclops’ (leader) of the Durham, North Carolina chapter of the Ku Klux Klan, a violent white-supremicist group dating from the Civil War which earned its notoriety by lynching people of color. Improbably, Ellis finds himself working with his worst enemy–a black woman from Durham with whom he has had many near-violent confrontations. Somehow, they find themselves co-chairing a group seeking to solve racial problems in their schools. They seemingly could not have less in common. Yet as they are busy clashing and despising one another, they begin to discover that they have far more in common than they have as differences, and that those apparently huge differences–race, color, gender–are completely superficial. The key moment happens when Ellis learns that the black woman’s daughter is being taunted and mocked, not by whites, but by other blacks, because her mother is working with a white racist Klansman–him. Ellis is stunned, because he has just learned that his son is also being taunted and mocked–not by blacks, but by other whites, because his father is working with a black activist woman who distrusts and dislikes white people–her. It is the exact same problem–except turned inside-out. Please take the time to read the article, to learn how they get to that strange place, and to learn what happens afterward. Once you have done the reading, then please write your reflection, and write about these two things:Briefly discuss how this brief oral history portrays both sides of our course motif.Then in roughly the second half of the reflection, compare this work briefly to one or several other, far more ancient works you have read in this course.
