This week’s discussion board focus is on thesis statements and support. You will write one main post, one reply to a classmate, and one reply to your instructor. Read all instructions carefully.
After watching the video on thesis statements, choose one of the following texts from The Norton Field Guide to read and analyze:
All Over But the Shouting by Rick Bragg, pp. 225-228
Sometimes the Tough Teen Is Quietly Writing Stories by Matt de la Pea, pp. 688-692
Is Google Making Us Stupid? by Nicholas Carr, pp. 789-803
Who Is Malala? by Malala Yousafzai, pp. 900-905
Main Post (150 words minimum)due Wednesday 11:59 p.m.
In your main post, discuss the thesis and support in the essay you chose. In most academic writing, thesis is stated early in the text. However, in other types of writing, the thesis may appear at the end of the text, or it may be implied. Whether a thesis is stated or implied, almost all writing has a point, and the author tries to convince the reader by providing support for that point.
What is the thesis statement of the essay you chose? Is the thesis implied or stated? If the thesis is directly stated, quote the sentence. Use quotation marks, a signal phrase, and APA in-text citation. If the thesis is implied, do your best to summarize the authors main point in one or two sentences.
Does the thesis engage you as a reader? Why or why not? How does the author convince you of his or her point? What support does the author provide? How does the author use examples and description to convince you?
Reply to Classmate (50 words minimum)due Sunday 11:59 p.m.
Replies to a classmate’s main post. You must read the essay they have analyzed. Here are some ways to respond constructively:
Have they identified the thesis of essay? Do you agree with their assessment? If not, what do you think the thesis is?
Did you notice other types of support in the essay that your classmate didn’t discuss? You could summarize those passages and explain why you think that support is effective.
If the classmate has included a quote, have they incorporated it correctly with quotation marks, signal phrase, and in-text citation? If not, give suggestions for correcting any errors.
Do you have questions about your classmate’s ideas or meaning? Ask questions about anything that’s unclear.
Remember, this is a conversation. however you reply, you should be furthering that conversation and adding to our understanding of thesis statements and support. Don’t repeat what someone else has said.
