You will be selecting a specific example of how local actions are being taken to address large-scale issues. Consider, for example, global hunger and poverty, access to education, environmental impacts, refugees, religious persecution, sharp income inequality, and ethnic conflict. Local initiatives could be part of global programs, or home-grown responses. Consider how the issue is impacting peoples lives, how it is being addressed, sources of funding, relationship to nation-states and the international community, the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), obstacles, achievements, and future goals. Also, consider whether the program could be implemented in other locations. Be sure to provide a general overview of the nature of the issue on a macro scale, and some background on the specific location you are writing about.

Papers should be at least 1,200 words (about 4 pages) and include at least three research-quality academic sources. Materials about the specific programs you write about will probably come from websites. As an example of an overlapping topic, both assignments could be related to global hunger. The Local Solutions for Global Change research paper could focus on a local program in Nigeria while your issue-oriented PechaKucha could focus on a program initiated by the World Health Organization being implemented in dozens of nations. Similarly, both assignments could be related to access to technology.
