Social Media Influencers
I want you to explore the role of social media influences or anyone famous you may follow on social media. For one week I want you to log and follow anything Kim Kardashian is trying to sell to you or anything they are trying to persuade you to believe or not believe in. I want you to just log anything they post for a week and add the context of that post that you think leads to compliance gaining. You only have to pick one person to follow so it doesn’t become too overwhelming. I want you to keep a word document of ever they cross over into compliance gaining mode and do the following:
1. Jonathan Van Ness June 24th:
– Talked with Elton John about HIV/AIDs Advocacy and the way in which we can all be more informed and active
2. Jonathan Van Ness June 26th
– Posted a teaser video of Fab5 with Lizzo about Pride and reminded us that pride started as an uprising against police brutality
This log should include any post they post on any platform that you follow them on. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram (don’t forget IG stories), etc.
After you have logged a week’s worth of information I want to answer the following questions:
1. Pick any three weapons of influence described in this book. Discuss in each case how the weapon was used to enhance compliance in what you would consider an exploitative manner and in what you would consider a non-exploitative manner. (20 points)
2. For each of the three weapons of influence you choose, describe the way you would defend yourself should the weapon be used against you in an exploitative fashion. (20 points)
3. Do you think influencers/famous people have more or less ability to gain compliance over the people who follow them? Why/why not? (20 points)
