Both access to health services and the quality of health services can impact health of individuals in the society. So, I will discuss the barriers to be accessing the health services such as lack of availability, high cost, lack of insurance coverage and its effect on the cardiovascular disease individuals health. The research paper will focus on the relations between insurance status and cardiovascular disease risk factor, treatment, and control as an important topic of social determinants of health.
The purpose of this term paper is to review what we know about a specific social determinant of health and its association with a specific health outcome or behavior. You must summarize what is known about the association, describe how the determinant of health is thought or hypothesized to influence the outcome and propose solutions to reduce inequalities resulting from this determinant of health. Papers will be no more than 6 typed pages in length (double spaced, 12-point font)
The term paper should do the following:
1) Describe the determinant: What is it exactly? And what is the outcome that you are examining. Be as specific as you can. You may comment on why this determinant exists!
2) Summarize and critique the research that examines association between the determinant and your selected outcome: This is part describing what research has shown. But also giving me your interpretation of the evidence. Is a strong case made? Does the evidence only apply to one group? Is the evidence based on flawed methodology? What are the limitations of the evidence?
3) Describe WHY/HOW the determinant is linked to your selected outcome: This can involve tapping into existing research that empirically tests connections, theoretical work that proposes mechanisms and/or why you think this connection exists! For the latter, just make your argument is sound and backed with related work. Note: if theres relevant work we discuss in class or is included on the syllabus that you dont discuss, I reserve the right to grade you down for this omission.
4) Make recommendations about how we can improve things (i.e. break/strengthen the connection between determinant and the outcome that are producing inequalities): This should be based on your understanding of how the SDoH is linked to your selected outcome! This can be based on existing work to address the connection or be your own recommendation.
5) the paper should include at a minimum 15 references.
