Recreate a famous painting from a major art movement.
After reading this week’s required readings in Graphic Design Basics and Adobe Illustrator, research and find a painting from a major art movement (Abstract, Art Deco, Futurism, Impressionism, Pop Art, Surrealism, or Symbolism). You’ll recreate this painting in Illustrator using your understandings of Illustrator shape tools and design elements.
Software Citation Requirements
This course uses open-source software, which must be cited when used for any student work. Citation requirements are on the Open Source Applications page.

Deliverables
Using Adobe Illustrator, recreate a famous painting. The completed image should match the size listed below and utilize the elements listed.
ARTBOARD SIZE:
One artboard at 6″ x 6″ inches
ELEMENTS:
Line, shape, color, mass, light, value, texture/pattern, space, and movement
You will submit your completed recreation in both .ai and .jpg formats.

Adobe Illustrator CC
This software is part of Adobe Creative Cloud.Please use a personal copy or the free Adobe Creative Cloud subscription provided by DeVry.

Lab Steps
STEP 1: Creating the Illustrator File
1.1 Open Illustrator and go to File > New
1.2 Choose “Print” as the medium
1.3 Enter the values below:
Name: lastname_week2lab (where your name is substituted for “lastname”)
Units: Inches
Width and Height: 6 inches
1.4 In the “Advanced Features”:
Color Mode: CMYK Color (note… CMYK is for print media, while RGB is for web-based media)
Raster Effects: High (300ppi)
1.5 Click Create
1.6 At this point, your document is in memory, but not yet saved. It is good practice to save your file to the location where you want it before continuing. To do this:
Go to File > Save As
When the file save dialog pops up, browse to the folder where you want to save your file
Make sure that the file type is “Adobe Illustrator (.ai)”
Click Save
1.7 Now you are ready to start your artwork!

STEP 2: Finding and Importing the Painting Graphic
videoicon 2.1 Locate a famous art movement painting graphic that you would like to use.
2.2 Save this graphic to your desktop.
2.3 Select File > Place to import your graphic into Illustrator.
2.4 Locate your graphic on your desktop and left click it to select it.
2.5 Left click the Place button.
2.6 Once your image is in Illustrator, use the Selection tool (the black arrow on the upper left hand side of the tool bar) to resize the image to fit the dimensions of the artboard.
2.7 When you are happy with the size, move on to the next step.

STEP 3: Recreate the Painting
3.1 Go to your Layers panel (Windows > Layers) and left click on the layer that your painting is currently on.
3.2 To the right of the Eye icon, left click on the blank square. This will lock the layer.
3.3 At the bottom of the Layers panel, left click on the icon that ‘Creates a new layer.’
3.4 You will use this new layer to draw your painting using the shapes and line tools. Spend as much time as you need to recreate this painting.

STEP 4: Save Your Illustrator Artwork and Export it as JPEG
videoicon 4.1 Make sure you Save often; File > Save.
4.2 When you have completed this assignment, turn off the Eye icon by left clicking on the original layer (this is where you placed the graphic you found).
4.3 Save your .ai file once again
4.6 Now you’re going to make a JPEG version of your artwork. To do this, go to File > Export > Find Save As type, and select JPEG.
4.7 Check mark Use Artboards.
4.8 Click Export.
4.9 In the folder where you saved your work, your should now see both your .ai file and your .jpg file.

STEP 5: Submit
5.1 Compress the Ai and JPEG files into a single .zip file. For assistance in zipping and unzipping files, review the How to Compress Files and Save as .Zip document (Links to an external site.)
5.2 Submit the .zip file.
