3) Topic: Impact on Practice and Policy
In your Session Long Project, you completed a literature review about a relevant and timely issue in the field of education. Often, research is used as the foundation to improve practice or inform educational reform efforts. Provide a short description of the issue under study in your Session Long Project. Then, offer a brief discussion of how your research might inform your professional practice or an educational policy reform. Respond to at least 3 classmates posts with additional ideas or ways your classmates issue might impact education practice or policy.
Please write a response to these posts:
A) My topic of discussion for my session long project is brain injuries related to athletics. For many years head injuries in sports have gone unnoticed, causing many athletes to compete while unknowingly having concussions. These concussions had a tremendous impact on their lives in the long run causing many mental illnesses in most. This issue in part is being recognized because of lawsuits that where faced by the NFL by former veterans ( Goldschmidt, 2017). By conducting my research for my literature review, I provided a great deal of articles that I discussed and explained the reasoning behind why this issue hadnt been addressed earlier and what I could do to make an impact on the sports community regarding the mitigation of brain injuries. By explaining the importance of this issue, it will in turn give leaders the knowledge they need in order to develop a policy reform in an effort to better protect athletes.

B) The start of the Discussion revolves mainly on the COVID-19 pandemic and how its Disastrous nature has taken its toll on Businesses and Economy. To start of I wanted to write my SLP on the Negative impact on the economy as its closely related to education apart from that I also felt it was proper as Im and educator that teaches Business management and accounting for High school Students. In my SLP I talked about how the Pandemic has impacted the business sector at a great extent including tourism. Due to the outbreak many business have been affected adversely, and many say the face of recession will soon show up and further impact the blow of the pandemic (Nicola, Alsafi, Sohrabi, Kerwan, Al-Jabir, Iosifidis, & Agha, 2020). Off the bat one of the biggest changes is the interference of big supply chain companies that provide many necessities we all take for granted. Aside from the disturbance of items I also pointed out the hardships, many small business are having in the aspect of closing down and trying to change regulations and trying to run a business from home. Issues ran into with this are the cost associated from having employees working from home including equipment and timeliness. Lastly I talked about the economy and how wall street turned to the government for assistant and how many multi billion companies have been greatly impacted by fewer customers. These are all issues that have been of a result of government directions to have people contained to small groups and even shutting down events that bring revenue to flourish cities and towns. This research done has positively helped me grow my professional practice as it allows me to open up these issues to my learners and discuss the importance in everyone collaborating as far as Events, Stores, and other like businesses to keep the economy going. Another huge impact using the COVID-19 pandemic as a boost to my practice is reflecting on the importance of technology and how working from home or learning from home is a vital key to progress in any situation. The technology aspect came from my school districts providing laptops to each students that way they can keep up with lessons and school assignments, this made me realize the importance in policy reform as technology being a vital part of it and having certain policy’s put in place to mandate the education of online platforms and similar ideas.

C) My session long project addresses social media in education. In the past 10 years, social media has become a critical part of everyday life, which has led to the implementation of social media in education in order to keep instruction engaging and relevant to students. The purpose of my session long project is to determine if social media is positively impacting and enhancing instruction like we assume it is and what are the challenges, opportunities, advantages, and disadvantages of using social media in education. As I completed my literature review I have determined that implementing social media is positively impacting and enhances instruction. Social media provides opportunities and advantages, as well as challenges and disadvantages, but the challenges and disadvantages can be addressed through policy and guidelines. For example, Greenhow and Lewin address the issue of control and surveillance arising in their study because schools restrict access to popular social networking sites and publicly accessible tools like blogs and wikis (Green & Lewin, 2016). A solution to this challenge is that students will need to create technology and digital citizenship policies, as well as acquire the right resources that allow teachers to supervise and monitor their students while using technology and accessing social networking sites. Another disadvantage that was discussed throughout various articles in my literature review was social media being a distraction. This can be mitigated with teacher’s classroom management strategies, as well as professional development for teachers on how to incorporate social media into their instruction. The professional development will help teachers plan accordingly to decrease student distraction. Overall, social media provides more advantages and opportunities for students and the disadvantages and challenges can be worked out through policy, practice, and professional development.

4) Topic: Professional Organizations
Within the context of your own field, consider the value of participating in professional organizations. How does participation inform your professional practice or professional development goals? Describe your current membership in professional organizations, or if you plan to join professional organizations in the future. Respond to at least 3 classmates posts.
A) Participating in professional organization is essential in education because it provides opportunity for collaboration. Collaboration is vital in education because it allows teachers to learn from one another through their experiences and share valuable resources. According to Sindelar (2011), “Meeting in teams benefits us as individual teachers because the experiences, information, and data from each team member contribute to the collective wisdom of the team. When teams commit to using this collective wisdom to shape their ideas into new classroom practice, and then measure and reflect on the results of this new practice, professional growth and student achievement sky rocket (p. 103-104). Professional organizations are teams and the collective wisdom of the team encourages, inspires, and develops teachers. Personally, I love participating in professional organizations because I am inspired and encouraged by the teachers I have the opportunity to collaborate with. We are able to exchange ideas and resources that develops and improves our instruction, curriculum, and practice. Educators must strive to continuously develop their craft and it’s important to surround yourself with people that can help you with that.
I participated in Hawaii State Teachers Associate when I was a public school teacher, which helped me network and collaborate with other teachers, especially 7th grade math teachers. I currently participate in Hawaii National Guard Association, which helps me network and collaborate with other Officers in the Hawaii Army National Guard. These associations provide platforms for groups of people to get to know one another, share experiences, and provide resources and knowledge. I want to get more involved and contribute more to the association in the future.

B) Participation in professional organizations is pretty much the basis of my field. Sports is a big organization in which everyone comes together to develop the best plans possible for the organization. There are instances in my community where professional team hold meeting at a football or basketball game and network with one another throughout the community. This is a great way to spread good practice and try to get rid of bad ones as well as inform the organizations about issues that may arise (Neo Law Group, 2009). This also helps me as a new coach to the field of sports to gain experience and build on practices that very beneficial to my team and try to rid myself of bad habits I may have picked up. Being in an organization has also helped me meet many great mentors that are willing to show me the way things work and what I can do to achieve success throughout my career.

C) Many school districts depending on your subject of teaching have many professional organizations that provide many great tools to inform and improve your professional development in your core subject. I believe these organizations are very important as it opens your eyes to many different opinions, topics and tools to help advance your self as an educator. Going in fresh and a substitute teacher and later on long term I quickly learned the importance of the organizations as a whole. As my career in education started a fellow teacher in the subject of consideration I wanted to be apart in told me about all the opportunity’s that our out there for Career Technical programs knowing Business marketing and finance was my position of interest . Once I became full time I was giving the same opportunity to enroll in these to further improve my knowledge in my area and resulting in a greater experience and positive outcome for my students. Immediately I enrolled into two well known Professional organizations that are know for their positive impact and support, these being Nevada Business Education of America (NVBEA) and also Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) (Association for Career & Technical Education, 2020). Once enrolled I had a plan and went in open minded to absorb as much as I could to improve my teaching as a newer educator. Both organization proved to be successful as to now three years later I am still enrolled in them and have benefit greatly from these in many aspects as far as lessons plans, keeping me updated on new regulations and policy. These two Professional organizations, provide informative seminars, presentations and invitation to larger national meeting as well as meeting people on the same spectrum as me that can bring new opportunity’s for products ,tools and even classroom equipment. Since joining these Organizations I can confidently say they have had a positive impact on my professional development as an educator and Advisor of an after school program called DECA where students get to experience real world business situations. Both organizations have provided me great tools to hone my knowledge and get to where I am now, I strongly encourage all new comers and seasoned veterans to attend or become apart of any Professional organization ans as for myself I continue to stay open in new organizations that can prove to be positive in my now career.
