Persuasive Speech
The Persuasive Speech Make Your Case!
Objective:
This speech is designed to provide students with an opportunity for practicing presentation skills, to promote critical thinking skills, to encourage informed global citizenship through the presentation process, to promote information competency/literacy.
Requirements:
Each student will deliver a persuasive speech that seeks to convince his/her audience to agree with and adopt the speakers point of view on either one of the pre-selected topics or a topic of your choice.
8 to 10 minutes in length
May incorporate visual/media aids
Speeches must be delivered extemporaneously (no reading of manuscript)
You must have a LIVE AUDIENCE of 5 Adults (see the rules for recording)
Objective:
Your objective in this speech will be to ESTABLISH A PERSUASIVE QUESTION OF FACT by asserting that a condition does or does not exist. This speech advances what is called a truth claim and uses reasons (facts, data, supporting material) that support your claim in order to persuade your audience what is or what is not so.
Topic Choices:
One of the difficulties in an 8 week online class is that we do not get face time to work together and choose the most appropriate topic for you and the situation, so I have developed an approach that seems to help focus students on a relevant topic that they can easily research and present in our abbreviated time frame.
I am going to offer you three topic choices to develop your speech around.
Climate Change
Social Media
The 2020 Presidential Election
In addition, I am going to seed your speech design process by providing you with a series of possible theses for each topic to build your speech around. Feel free to adopt any thesis as your own and develop YOUR speech by listing the reasons that support your truth claim.
PLEASE NOTE:
If you cannot get behind any of these topics, you may absolutely come up with your own. Please make sure that you submit the Topic and Thesis assignment in week 5 so I can help you fine tune the message before you begin the speech composition process.
Topic 1: CLIMATE CHANGE
There is no doubt that the subject of climate change is one of the most debated issues in American society. For this speech, consider the following proposition. Climate Change is THE MOST IMPORTANT existential threat facing humanity at this point in time.
Begin your speech planning process by agreeing or disagreeing with the proposition, and then craft a speech that proves your point of view.
If you agree with the proposition, here is a possible thesis:
I want my audience to believe that climate change is the most important existential threat facing humanity at this time.
If you disagree with the proposition, here are a couple of possible theses:
I want my audience to believe that climate change, is not the only important existential threat facing humanity at this time, there are several others <name them> that exceed or compare to the threat posed by climate change.
I want my audience to believe that <your topic (s)>, not climate change, is the most important existential threat facing humanity at this time.
Topic 2: SOCIAL MEDIA
There is no denying that Social Media has transformed the landscape of human relationships. Its ubiquity has impacted the way that we relate to one another in our personal, professional, and social lives. There is also no denying that people have strong opinions about the impact of that transformation on our relationships. Some see enhancements and advantages, while others see the limitations and disadvantages.
So where do you stand on social medias impact on human relationships?
If you believe that it has had a positive effect, here are a couple of possible theses you could use:
I want my audience to believe that social media has <improved, enhanced, enriched, etc.> our relationships.
If you believe that it has had a negative effect, here are a couple of possible theses you could use:
I want my audience to believe that social media has <ruined, distorted, disrupted, etc> our relationships.
Topic 3: THE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN
One of our course objectives is to help students understand that their voice matters in the public square. And, even though some of you run from the talk of politics, my experience is that most people have an opinion especially during a presidential election cycle. So, since we are in the midst of the 2020 campaign, I am going to offer you an opportunity to convince me which candidate (Democratic, Republican, Independent, 3rd Party) you think would make the best President for America in 2020.
Your thesis is simple: I want my audience to believe that < Candidate> is best suited to become President in 2020.
