The IRS has put out a warning to watch for scams especially during the COVID pandemic and thereafter. Tax scams rise during the tax season or times of crisis like the one we are in. People will receive emails or even website links to click on to gather information to steal their money. There have also been letters and text messages that contain COVID-19 or coronavirus, and even stimulus to gather personal information like email, passwords, or bank account information.
This scam has been successful because people get scared when they see IRS. Nobody wants to IRS on them. I know I got sick in my stomach when a letter came in the mail that said IRS and it was only to explain about the situation and payment. People dont want to be in debt to the IRS so they think when they receive a letter, text or email that is it ok to give whatever information they are asking for so they can be left alone and just pay off anything that the IRS says they owe.
A Red flag directly from the IRS website The IRS doesn’t initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messages or social media channels to request personal or financial information. Other red flags are if the scammer is demanding money, the IRS doesnt demand money and they allow you to appeal what is in question. The scammer may also use calling the police as a scare tactic. If someone feels they are scammed they can call the IRS directly and question what was presented to them.
As a security manager, training would be put together of the signs of a phishing scam. Like with the IRS and taxes. They would know that the IRS never asks for personal information over the phone and rarely will just show up at your door. They send letters in the mail letting individuals what due and letters before they were to show up, if it comes to that. Put out the specifics of what the IRS is looking for and the specifics of what happens if they need to make a payment and who the payment goes to or made out to. Making everyone aware that when they hear or see IRS to not get scared and automatically react and if it comes down to it, take the letter, email, text, or whatever phishing method was used to a lawyer or security at your job to have them look over it and they can help you determine if it is a scam or not.
