Hacker ethic is the thought that as a hacker you should share your information with others in the community and that as long as they don’t steal anything after hacking a system it is ok. Hackers’ theory is that they are only getting the joy out of the challenge to see if they can gain entry to a system but they aren’t doing it to steal any information. I don’t agree and think they are a criminal. They are going into a system that isn’t theirs, observing information that is private and although they didn’t steal anything possibly they didn’t have permission to be there. If they didn’t steal the information today when they broke into the system then they may another day if that particular person or company makes them mad they could use that against them. We have a large IT company where I am employed and I am pretty sure they don’t see if they can get into my email, etc. They never ask me for my password but do connect remotely to my computer if I am having a technical problem. There are other ways to test the security of a system without seeing if you can hack into it and gain entry to the private information. My company sends out emails several times a week to see if we are paying attention to whether or not it is Spam or not.
The hacker manifesto seems to be a book that basically states it’s okay to be a hacker and there is nothing criminally being done when you participate in hacking. I think hackers are normally really intelligent people and possibly instead of trying to hack a computer to steal a person’s information they could get a great paying job in the IT field and make great money legally.
Social media is easy for people to access and learn a lot of private information about an individual. Some people list all of their information on their Facebook pages such as full dob and phone number. This information can be easily cross-referenced and locate the home address and other private/personal information about an individual. Organized crime members can locate information this way about the individual or people like to post when they are on vacation and that lets them know there may not be anybody at the house. This would be an opportunity for them to break into their home. Individuals like to post pictures of all the expensive items they purchase to show their friends but not everybody that can see their information is a friend and could be looking for their next victim. I don’t really think there is anything the government could do about criminals getting information from Facebook because people need to be responsible and protect themselves with their private information. If you want to show your friends your large fancy purchase then invite them over but be careful about what you share on Social media pages.
