The Situation:
You write a regular life and lifestyle advice column for a North American publication publiction. Recently you received the following message:
I am a sophomore at a largestate university. As far back as I can remember, I have suffered from a nagging sense that things are not quite right with my ife or that I am not well adjusted to society. In recent months, however, this nagging unease has grown into serious anxiety that interferes with my life. My courses have become more challenging and my grade point average has gone down. I worry that if this slide continues, I will not be able to go to law school. Moreover, I have recently had to take a part-time job to make ends meet financially. My friends and acquaintances all seem happy and content. They have plenty of financial support and time to relax and enjoy themselves. I often wonder why I cannot be like them. Recently,a dear friend has beeen iving me the old shoulder, ignoring me whenever I ask for help or suggest that we get together. Sometimes I look around at the crowds of people passing by on the sidewalks and despair about my prospets for success and happiness. How can I begin to turn my life around and find some contentment in our heartless society?
YOUR TASK:
Your taks is to write a column replying to this message from a basic Buddhist perspective. Your reply should be in paragraph form, and it shoud include five basic Buddhist ideas. Note that our task here is not to explain Buddhism in any systematic way, not to promote it. Instead, your goal is to use Buddhist insights and ideas to create a set of useful advice for the author of the message above. Therefore, the column you write should be specifically addressed to “J in Michigan” and deal with the points that person raises. The total words for the column must not exceed 300 words.
