Not all EBP projects result in statistically significant results. Define clinical significance, and explain the difference between clinical and statistical significance. How can you use clinical significance to support positive outcomes in your project( my project is leadership initiative in NICU)?

Q1: A very strict definition of clinical significance is when “once troubled and disordered clients are now, after treatment, not distinguishable from a meaningful and representative nondisturbed reference group” (Kendall & Grove, 1988, p. 148). In addition it has been argued that the change due to treatment must be reliable (Jacobson & Truax, 1991: Ogles, Lambert, & Masters, 1996). In order to determine clinical significance you must operationally define each of the terms in the definition. How can you define a client as “troubled and disordered?” When is a client “not distinguishable from a …nondisturbed reference group?” How can you define “reliable change?”

Q2: The determination of the independent and dependent variables is influenced by what is asked (question) and what is the intention (anticipated results). It is basically learning the relationship between the selected variables (control and causation) by defining if the ability to control one variable could cause a change in another (Leatham, 2012). The physical location of the office, clinic or hospital will greatly affect the utilization of services by the community. The ease of transportation is one factor to be considered in the individual’s satisfaction. Consideration of other variables (type of service, speed of service, and quality of service) may also influence the results.
