40675 Required readings–depends on focus, read if relevant to your selection: SECURITY FOCUS (S) or FIRE LIFE SAFETY FOCUS (FLS)
1. Textbook: Chapters 5,6,7
INSTRUCTION: you must use ALL of the required readings and at least 1 of the 5 enrichment sources. In task 2, you must include at least 1 of the required readings.
TASK 1: Decide to focus on either security or fire life safety. Perform an internet search and find an example of an ineffective security or fire life safety policy, procedure, or order that resulted in an incident or hazard (2009-2019), preferably in a high-rise building, that could have been prevented.
**Even if you select an incident/hazard that is NOT in a high-rise building, you will need to discuss prevention and suggested policy “as though it was a high-rise building” by keeping in mind how these structures pose unique problems.
First– briefly describe the incident and why it happened—everyone must use an incident/hazard from 2009 to 2019 [3 sentences]. Please note that security incidents/hazards include all types of criminal activity beyond terrorism/mass killing. Insert the link to the report on the incident at the beginning of your post and include a citation from the news source you used. [Security, use Cholewa, 2017, FLS, consider Ch. 6, Craighead, 2009f or one of the enrichment sources]
Second–Describe the security OR fire life safety in place (your choice, one not both) at the time of the incident/hazard. For example, consider physical security environment described in Ch. 5 (Craighead, 2009e) and also use it for life fire-safety along with issues in the building described in Ch. 6 (Craighead, 2009f).
Third–Discuss how the incident could have been prevented from a management perspective, as described in Ch. 7. (Craighead, 2009g)
Fourth– Suggest the policy that should have been in place instead—it may be one that was implemented recently in reaction to what had happened or what was suggested be done in the after-action report [use at least 1 of the enrichment sources]
*Include in-text citations and reference lists in your answer and in your replies.
