Qualitative Design used
The design I used in this research is case study. The purpose of this kind of design is to explore the in-depth experience of a given topic by a group of people. The study is also restricted to the direct involvement of the research in the research process. The researcher has to take part in administering of questionnaires, taking field notes, and involved in conducting of interviews. The end result is the in-depth description of the experience of the group examined during the research study. The results obtained can help formulate a quantitative research topic for statistical analyses of some of the valuables observed (Lewis, 2015).
In the current research, the researcher’s aim was to gain an understanding of how compassion fatigue impacts the professional and personal life of the rural emergency nurse. The sample population used was a small rural ER department north of Toronto. The sample taken was purposive in nature whereby the subjects had to be registered nurses and with 2 years’ experience in emergency room services (Patricia Dekeseredy, 2015). The numbers of acute patients admitted into our various emergency department continue to increase, these includes uninsured patients who have no primary health care providers, but only relies on the emergency room for acute and chronic illnesses with high acuity of care, while, the numbers of available professionals is low compared to the population they have to serve, leading to burn out and fatigue, which also lead to a low score of compassion care being provided to these patients.
Appropriateness of the Design
The study design was appropriate for the adequate exploration of the nurses’ experience in the care setting. The assumption is that the experiences of registered nurses have a correlation that can help understand their experience of compassionate fatigue. The design is also appropriate in the collection of data. The study requires understanding the experience of each of the subjects and recording their responses. Therefore, case study design was the best approach to understanding the aspects of compassionate fatigue and its effects on nursing practice.
Address of Ethical Issues in the Research
Ethics in research involves the equitable distribution of benefits to the research subjects, respect to the research subjects, and justice in the distribution of potential risks. In this study, there were no procedures being conducted on the research subjects. Therefore, the distribution of potential harm was not a major concern to the researchers. In terms of beneficence, taking part in the research would be helpful in ensuring that compassion fatigue and its contribution to the nursing behaviour are better understood. There is bias in the selection of research subjects.
Differences that a Quantitative Research would have achieved
A quantitative research design would have made it impossible to cover the research variables. For a quantitative research design to be effective, the researcher has to outline an independent and a dependent variable. The independent variable is crucial as the basis of the research. Alterations of the independent variable affect the dependent variable. The changes in the dependent variable form the findings of the research.
In the current research, there are no dependent and independent variables. The research aims at evaluating the experiences of a group of nurses in a rural care setting. Therefore, the application of a quantitative research design is impossible in this research. However, subsequent studies can be based on quantitative study designs based on the needs of more research on the topic (McCusker, 2015).
