Persuasion Through Poetry

“It would be hard to say that any outstanding essay does not involve meticulous word choice or the ability to persuade a reader through sheer aesthetic prowess. Poetry teaches students how to do this.” – Dorothea Lasky (2012)

Lasky, in her article, “What Poetry Teaches Us About the Power of Persuasion,” makes a connection between poetry and persuasion. If we consider Lasky’s point, selecting a word can be persuasive. In your discussion post, reflect upon and respond to Lasky’s article (What Poetry Teaches Us About the Power of Persuasion) with the following questions in mind:

Is communicating a research topic in written or verbal form an act of persuasion?
Can the choice to study a problem, even one that appears to be embedded in science, be subjective?
What happens to objectivity in research? Does it exist?
Consider topics based on subjects such as global warming, supply and demand, term limits, and diabetes. How do we ensure that our research is not filled with alternative facts that create the vision that we most want to communicate?
