Organ Donation Crisis
The need for human organs is consistently on the rise. 95% of United States adults support organ donation but only 54% are opted in as organ donors (organdonor.gov). Donations are difficult to come by because the continued increase in needed organs and not enough donors. Also, potential donors may think there are long term risks, they do not receive any type of compensation, or may affect their current health or even death. Legally donating organs would include the consent from the donor, not accept any type of compensation and consultation with a licensed medical team that would medically clear the donor to perform the donation. There are many benefits to the recipient of the organ that is needed. The legal donation of organs can give a person a second chance at life, a selfless act, and contribute to medical research.
An organ donor can give a suffering person a second chance at life. More organ donors are needed daily. There are over 100,000 people who are on the national transplant list at a given time, every 10 minutes and new person is added to the list and there are 8,000 deaths per year due to the lack of donors (organdonor.gov). Some potential donors believe they might have to cover the cost from the surgery of donating when in fact the recipient covers the cost. A single donor can save up to eight lives by providing a heart, 2 lungs, liver, pancreas, 2 kidneys, intestines or the skin. Organ donation can save lives and restore health, and most major religions permit such donations (Organ Donation, para. 2). There are many myths that deter people from donating when there are countless positives from someone donating.
An organ donor is a selfless act. A person might donate to a loved one to help keep them
alive and healthy or the passing of a person can spark a selfless act of donating to those in need. Some may not even thing about organ donation prior to the question arising. An example from the article A Simple Act shares how a family, without hesitation donates their son’s organs to help those in need. “Now that he’s gone, shouldn’t we give the organs?” one of us asked. “Yes,” the other replied. And that was all there was to it. Our decision was not clouded by any doubts about the medical staff. We were convinced they had done everything in their power to save Nicholas. To be sure, we asked how they knew his brain was truly dead, and they described their high-tech methods in clear, simple language. It helped. But more than that, it was the bond of trust that had been established from the beginning that left no doubt they would not have given up until all hope was gone” (para. 8-9) The family gained the trust of the medical staff and realized they would be helping others. There was no need for their son to be buried with his fully functional organs. This selfless act saved other’s lives from his healthy organs.
The medical field can use organs for medical research and help find cures to health issues. The article Immortality Guaranteed by Joe Kita explains how a man by the name of Seth Murphy donated his entire body for medical research. “The use of Seth’s head and brain is that they went to a training facility in Illinois where they were used for “anatomy education of future doctors. Fellows at this sports medicine facility used them to practice rotator cuff and labrum repair surgery. Then both joints became part of two research projects—one to determine the best way to fix or “plate” a fractured clavicle, and the other to test a new repair procedure for rotator cuff tears called superior capsule reconstruction. The VA San Diego Healthcare System, in collaboration with UC San Diego School of Medicine, used Seth’s knee joints for researching better MRI and ultrasound techniques. A “musculoskeletal solutions company” in Pennsylvania (which asked to be unnamed) used Seth’s torso to train surgeons in something called a lateral lumbar interbody fusion. The Lux Med Group’s Medical Education Center in Warsaw used Seth’s feet in an orthopedic treatment course for doctors. The class provided them with the opportunity to practice surgical techniques for treating deformities of the forefoot.” Many different hospitals were able to practice and complete research on his donated organs. They would have been buried with him and would have gone to waste. The continued push for donors can increase with the help of professionals providing more information from their studies on donations.
Some people are reluctant to donating their organs due to various reasons. They believe their religion does not allow donation, they will have to pay for donating, the organ will be sold, no monetary compensation or risk of infection or death. Most religions allow for donation because it shows compassion and selflessness. The donor does not have to pay for any part of the procedure. The organs are traced as will not end up being sold or traded to another recipient. Donation is out of the kindness of someone’s heart to save another person’s life. Lastly, the risks are there, however, the medical team has the resources and knowledge to do everything thing can to complete a successful surgery (Frequently Asked Questions). There are many reputable sources available to research and get a clear understanding of all the benefits and debunk the myths. Unfortunately, many people believe what they think is true or something they read that was not from a reputable source. This is why it is important to do research and talk to medical professionals to understand all the positives for being an organ donor.
Continued education from professionals is needed to share all the benefits of donating organs due to the increased number of organs needed annually. Many people are uneducated and do not fully understand the concept. It is an eye opener for people when they know they can potentially save eight people. A selfless act, like donating organs, can be fulfilling with a sense of satisfaction of saving a life. Lastly, providing to medical research to help find cures is another fulfilling feeling. The organ donation population can continue to grow with the knowledge from professionals.
