Research Paper Notes
Find three (3) possible sources for your paper; read them; take notes on them in the following fashion:
1) Note Cards- on 3”X5” cards (or larger) write out important notes, facts, statistics or quotes from your sources; make sure to write down the bibliographic information (author, title, etc), use page numbers by each set of information you take down, and remember to put quotation marks around direct quotes.

2) Notes-these may be typed or handwritten; as with the note cards, write out important data along with the page numbers and bibliographic information.

3) Print Outs-for most on-line information, you may want to provide a print-out of each page (try to look for a special print button that will remove any unwanted material). You will have all of the on-line information, but you will need to annotate (highlight, underline) and add notes on to the page that indicates you have read through and have decided what information will be useful and how.

Annotated Bibliography

Waite, Linda J., et al. “Nonfamily Living and the Erosion of Traditional Family Orientations Among Young Adults.” American Sociological Review, vol. 51, no. 4, 1986, pp. 541-554.
The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their belief in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. In contrast, an earlier study by Williams cited below shows no significant gender differences in sex role attitudes as a result of nonfamily living.
