Application for Master’s Degree in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing

My names are ELSIE MANKAA NGWA and I write this letter to re- apply into the MSN, in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse master’s degree program. I am a seasoned professional nurse, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. I have been working as a registered nurse for the past seventeen years, and I currently work on an acute Psychiatric Unit, taking care of the needs of patients with mental health problems. My job description includes diagnosing and treating mental illnesses with a broad and various range of therapeutic approaches including some form of psychotherapy and administration of prescribed medications.

Personal/Professional goals

My interest in psychiatric mental health nursing developed more than a decade ago when I realized that the majority of patients that we see in the hospitals have some form of mental instability, which could be because of a recent loss, divorce, financial or just work stress/relationship stress. I also want to boost my educational credentials and specialize in the population of mentally sick individuals especially since this population is mostly overlooked. I believe that once I graduate from Walden University with a master’s degree in psychiatric nursing, I will be in a better position to not only provide better care to my this patient population, but also become part of the solution to the challenge of providing quality care to the growing needs of mentally ill patients.

Academic Experience

I am in the course of attaining a master’s degree in gerontology from Bethel University, just need to defend my Thesis. I am a holder of a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University Of Maryland School of nursing. I also attended the Baltimore City Community College where I took prerequisites to becoming a BSN. Prior to these, I attended the University of the District of Colombia, Washington, DC from August 1995 to September 1996 when I graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse. I am a holder of three important certifications namely ACLS, PALS, and Trauma Nurse Certifications.
