DQ 1.2.5 BASIC ARGUMENT FORMAT
38610Class,
We are discussing the writing process in this week’s DQ. To extend our knowledge of the essay specifically, we will look a little deeper at form and structure.
First, define what you believe a basic argument essay is and what its function is (not a book or dictionary definition). Second, review the attached essay format/organizational and worksheet documents I’ve attached. Finally answer these questions: 1) How does the format and structure differ from your definition of a basic argument essay should look like? 2) How can you expand this base model to incorporate longer essays? Provide clear examples to support your understanding. I have attached two forms for you to review (and use on future work).
Basic 5-Paragraph Essay Format
Adapted for APA and Composition II
Use this five-paragraph format as the base for your papers in this class:
I. Introduction
a. Introduce topic / subject and, if a specific work, the author and title of the
work (article)
b. Invite and engage your audience (use a rhetorical tool, if you wish) and/or
a little background or history (evidence should be limited in the
introduction)
c. Provide a single strong sentence thesis that clearly states your position and
purpose
II. Body Paragraph (argument point)
a. Transitional word or phrase / Topic sentence
b. Support 1
c. Support 2
d. Support 3 (up to 5 examples)
e. Concluding sentence (1-3 sentences)
III. Body Paragraph (argument point)
a. Repeat II
IV. Body Paragraph (argument point)
a. Repeat II (add as many paragraphs as you need: one argument point per
paragraph)
V. Conclusion
a. Sum up the points you made in the body of the paper (do not, however,
summarize the content of the essay)
b. Mirror your thesis
c. Leave the audience with something to think about (do not add any new
information, advice, predictions (except for proposals), or evidence in the
conclusion)
NOTE: Length of essay is determined by the assignment instructions, but generally
between 1,500 words in Composition II. The Number of paragraphs will vary. Do not
attempt to write more 750 words in five paragraphs. Doing so will likely result in very
long paragraphs that attempt to cover too much information. Remember, the 5-paragraph
essay is the base model from which you build longer and stronger essays. You may add
body paragraphs to the model, but you MAY NOT subtract from it, meaning you must
have at least five paragraphs consisting of an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a
conclusion for a complete essay. In general, paragraphs should be between 5 and 10
sentences. The ideal length is 8 sentences. In APA it is preferred that you summarize and
paraphrase, though some quotes may be necessary as emphasis.
