Causal Analysis: Impact of the Internet
40848Purpose: A causal analysis on the effects of the internet and other technologies on our lives today. It will mainly address the effects but should also briefly address the causes (e.g. the rapid adaption of the internet, the widespread use of technology, the adaption of technology without guidelines, etc.).
Audience: Anyone in class.
Voice: First and Third Person are appropriate.
Assignment: Develop an essay of 6 or more paragraphs that includes
1) an introductory paragraph (or two) that hooks your reader’s interest and ends with a thesis that states your topic and central idea;
2) at least three body paragraphs (you may have more)—each should begin with a topic sentence that addresses one point of the thesis and then draws from examples, personal experience, observation, hypothetical situations, and the articles we read in class (as well as other research), to support the thesis (making sure to explain how your support relates to and develops your thesis);
3) a conclusion that brings the essay to a satisfactory close by restating the thesis and/or reviewing what you have discussed in your essay.
In addition, you will need to add:
a) 2-5 resources other than yourself-these sources may include the articles used in class, videos provided, as well as other research that you have conducted; be sure to consider what types of resources you use (popular resources are okay but consider the reliability of them); you may also want to consider using at least one scholarly source—you will need to use these in future essays.
b) in-text citation of your sources used;
c) end-text citation in the form of a Works Cited page, using proper MLA format.
Grading Criteria:
In this essay, you will be expected
1) to provide a thesis statement that clearly makes your essay’s focus clear to the reader;
2) organize using multiple-paragraph format with specific topic sentences for each body paragraph;
3) incorporate specific and well-developed support using the assigned articles or video as well as further library database research in addition to specific personal experience, examples, personal observation, and hypothetical situations;
4) revise the paper for thesis, organization, and development of support;
5) edit the paper for clarity of expression, sentence structure, grammar and punctuation;
6) incorporate MLA in-text citation for all sources used and add a Works Cited page listing all sources used.
Background:
Author Alan Greenblatt in the “Impact of the Internet on Thinking,” discusses the implications of the web and other forms of technology on how we live our lives, and how we process and understand information, including “whether the Internet is changing the way people think.” In addition, the video by Frontline “Digital Nation” as well as the article by Glazer, discuss some of the additional issues that we face today as we living in a rapidly-evolving technological revolution.
Prompt:
In a causal analysis, mostly focusing on effects, consider how the Internet has impacted life today: How have the internet and other technologies (wi-fi, smart phones, tablets, driverless vehicles, etc) impacted our lives?
You may explore the advantages and/or disadvantages of technology (you may include other technology forms in addition to or instead of the Internet) in your own life, in the lives of those you know, or in society in general. The paper does not need to make an argument, but you may give your opinion about the issue.
Structure:
Remember that you will want to write a casual analysis that mainly focuses on the effects (the causes may be discussed, but these are a direct result of the technologies) of this digital revolution and the impact of the internet.
