Analysis of the Arab-Israeli conflict
37250Project 2: Analysis of the Arab-Israeli conflict
The Arab-Israeli conflict is central to the MENA region’s stability and future. In this essay you will address yourself to this central political and identity contest and also evaluate it from the perspective of one outside regional actor. This essay assignment requires you to articulate the main events in the Arab-Israeli conflict, including changes over time, and to apply theory to critically evaluate the trajectory of the peace process. Further, by taking on the view of one state in the region, you are to outline the impact of the conflict on your state and the role your state has played and may potentially play in addressing the challenges of peace in the MENA region. By addressing this difficult subject in this manner, you will gain an understanding of how peace and conflict processes are shaped by individuals and political forces within the region, and how the development of the region has been affected by this central ethnic and religious identity contest.
As you prepare your essay on Arab-Israeli relations, think through the readings, the various roles and identities of actors across the region, and the contemporary views of scholars and policy practitioners. You are to write an essay that analyzes the Arab-Israeli conflict and a regional state’s role in that conflict as well as the potential for peaceful settlement of the conflict. You will use some aspects of theory to delve deeply into this subject. Your paper should have at least two parts, which are detailed below. After reviewing all of these materials, address yourself directly to the questions below.
Part 1: The conflict (about 3 pages)
Briefly describe several changes in the conflict over time and reasons for these changes. Be specific about any shifts in significant relationships.
Applying structural realism, neoliberal institutionalism, or constructivism, how can you best explain the trajectory of the peace process since the high hopes of Oslo? Does theory improve your understanding of the events and prospects for peace?
Part 2: Your state’s role and goals in the Arab-Israeli conflict (3 pages)
Choose a state in the region on which to focus (such as Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey etc.). What has been your state’s role and/or position in the Arab-Israeli conflict? How has the conflict affected your state in terms of political and economic development? How has that role shifted over the time period and events you covered above in Part 1? Be sure you articulate how politics, cultural differences, economics, and/or religion may have shaped your state’s role and proposed solutions to the conflict.
What potential power does your state bring to the table to affect the Arab-Israeli conflict toward an outcome that is favorable to your state? What is that outcome that your state has as a goal?
Who are your allies and opponents in the effort to reach your state’s goals?
What strategies should your state use to reach its desired goals with regard to the Arab-Israeli conflict?
Be sure part 2 of your paper is focused on your chosen regional state.
Your essay will be evaluated in terms of how thoroughly you: answer the questions above; use resources to document your main points; and properly cite referenced work. Your essay should address all of the questions above and should consist of at least 1,250 words of text (at least 5 pages of double-spaced and 12 point font of text). Citations and a bibliography will likely make up an additional 1-2 pages.
To successfully complete Project 2, you will need to organize your responses to the questions and then craft a formatted essay that includes each of the following:
A title page;
Well-developed introductory paragraph explaining the purpose of the essay and briefly referencing some of the main points/contentions offered in the essay;
The body of the essay should consist of your effort to best answer the primary questions from the assignment prompt and should consist of at least 1,250 words of text (at least 5 pages of double-spaced and 12 point font of text). Though the method by which this is done is largely up to you, it is essential that the responses to the questions in the prompt be based upon scholarly readings and should remain at all times defensible (in an academic sense). You have a great deal of information to draw from in creating your essay, including the assigned readings and hyperlinked sources in the module notes. As is the case with every assignment in POL 363, presenting any unsubstantiated, illogical, or indefensible position will have an adverse effect on the final grade. Please direct any questions regarding these expectations to the instructor;
A concise concluding paragraph that briefly restates both the purpose of the essay as well as some of the primary argument offered by you, the essay’s author. Be sure the concluding paragraph does not introduce new information;
A list of all sources consulted the preparation of the essay. The essay should be formatted according to APA-style documentation. This includes the format of the list of references.
