Week 8: Contract Management and Cost Control
Throughout this course we have examined how Earned Value Management (EVM) integrates scope, schedule, and cost to provide effective project control. In Week 8, we focus on the critical relationship between contract management and cost control. Discuss how different contract types (such as Firm-Fixed-Price, Cost-Reimbursable, Time and Materials, and Incentive contracts) impact a project manager’s ability to control costs and maintain schedule performance. Referring to the case study used throughout the course, analyze which contract type(s) were likely used and how the chosen contract structure influenced cost and schedule variances. How could better contract management practices, combined with EVM metrics (CPI, SPI, CV, SV, etc.), have improved cost control and reduced financial risk on the project? Has your understanding of the importance of aligning contract strategy with integrated cost and schedule control changed since the start of the course? Explain why or why not. Support your initial post with specific examples from the case study, course readings, and at least one additional scholarly or professional source. Respond substantively to at least two classmates by comparing contract approaches or offering alternative perspectives on risk allocation and cost control.
