Inpatient admission: The patient had experi- enced increasingly severe pain in his left arm, left shoulder, and neck for two months. Magnetic resonance imaging performed prior to admission showed evidence of a C7-T1 disc herniation. His only other health problem was benign hyper- tension, which was controlled with medications. He was admitted for a cervical laminotomy and complete cervical discectomy of the cervical thoracic disc, which were performed by oblique, muscle-splitting incision. His postoperative course was unremarkable, and he was discharged after two days. Discharge diagnoses: (1) Cervical disc herniation, C7-T1; (2) benign essential hypertension.
