After viewing the film, and based on my own experience, the modern police officer needs to have several qualities. Law enforcement has changed dramatically in the last several years. The warrior mentality is what was trained and what was expected. It was the “us” versus “them” mentality. It worked for the time, but as society evolves, so should law enforcement. I believe a modern police officer must possess both mindsets (guardian/warrior) depending on the situation. One must know when to transition and what type will have the most effective outcome for the given situation. For example, some contacts (citizens), only know the warrior mindset language in that they must be told what to do and told aggressively to gain compliance. In the jail system, this is commonplace. First off, in many instances, the officers are new and are still learning how to communicate with criminals, and some jail inmates only respond to direct commands. However, I believe the guardian mindset will garner more positive outcomes and possibly less physical force. Effective communication is essential in the guardian mindset. De-escalation tactics have become commonplace in today’s law enforcement. They decrease physical force, and injuries to suspects, and the officers, and the outcome is the same.
