Rituals are a human and cultural universal. At base, all rituals are patterned activities intended to enactspiritual, social, or other transformations. While rituals need not be religious, most often, we understandritual as a religious practice. In this assignment, each student will research a particular ritual, ritual object,or ritual practitioner in a religious context
Writing the Assignment:Assignment posts should be approximately 500 words in length. The assignment requires:1) a short description of the ritual (etc) and its ethnographic (and geographic) context,2) a brief explanation of the function and/or meaning of the ritual (etc),3) a brief analysis of the ritual (etc) applying the conceptual framework developed by Arnoldvan Gennep and Victor Turner, whether in part or in its entirety (here, see the notes, overview, and readings for Module 2), and,4) at least one comparison to a similar ritual, ritual object, or ritual practitioner in a cross-culturalcontext,5) and, at least one image of the ritual (etc) must be included (and attributed).Other than course readings, the use of academic sources is not required in this short piece (although youmay wish to use them). You should be able to complete the research for this assignment online. However, you should be careful to ensure that the sources you use are credible: academic and religious websites(typically ending with .edu or .org), newspaper and magazine features (e.g. The Globe and Mail, the Guardian, the Atlantic, The New Yorker, National Geographic, etc), online travelogues and even some blogs will be muchmore reliable than mashup lists, facebook pages, instagram feeds, and other forms of social media. And itshould go without saying that, of course, your sources, whatever they are, must be cited. On this, pleasesee the citation information in the Course Information subfolder called Handouts & Supports.
