Theories and Crisis

Theories and models ofcrisis intervention frame and inform the decisions you will make to resolve theissues that come before you. Theory explains a phenomenon andis intangible it tries to define the why and the what. A model simplifiesthe theoretical ideas and provides concrete steps or stages about what to do ina crisis. For example, one may have a theory, or idea, of their dream house: itwill explain why the house is the dream house and what the dream houseincludes. Once the theory of the dream house is defined, one could take it toan architect, who can then make a model that will define the steps to build thehouse according to a plan. It takes the dream from a theory or idea tosomething that is more real, tangible, or applicable.

For this Assignment, youwill examine crisis intervention theories and apply a model to a criticalincident.

      Consider criticalincidents from the past year and select one that you can use for thediscussion.

      Review the steps of thepsychological first aid model

By Day 7

Submit a 3- to 4-page paper. In your paper:

      Describe a criticalincident you have heard about in the news in the past year (local, regional,national, or international) that is of interest to you, but not a crisis youhave experienced personally.

      Choose one of thetheories discussed by James and Gilliland (2017) you see as the best approachfor your selected critical incident (James & Gilliland, 2017, p. 14-18).

o  Describe the theory.

o  Justify why it is the best approach to your chosen crisis.

      Then, review the CrisisIntervention Models (James & Gilliland, 2017, p. 19-23). Explain whichmodel you see as most appropriate in responding to your chosen criticalincident.

      Review the PsychologicalFirst Aid model, and apply all eight steps of the Psychological First Aid Modelto the crisis you selected.

      Identify onecharacteristic and one competency you consider important for the HSPP in thiscritical incident response.
