Read the excerpts from Josephus’ Jewish War (Mellor pp. 269-288) and Tacitus’ Life of Agricola (Mellor pp. 290-301). Both works describe wars in which subject peoples try to resist domination by the Romans. Compare and contrast both authors’ attitudes towards Roman rule. Do they both justify Roman power to the same extent? Is either author at all sympathetic to the other side? How do their backgrounds (Tacitus was a Roman senator, Josephus was a Jewish nobleman) help to explain their positions?
