English 0001, Section 25
25 May 2020 (This is an example for set-up; use your actual due date.)
Keep your introductions brief. (1-3 sentences.) Make them at least indicate the subject and the stance.
Your thesis should be rather specific. It should answer these (or as many as it can) as correlations:
Who
What
When
Where
Why
How
And then it should be put together and include a stance.
You need to have a thesis-map or a three-pronged thesis. (The supporting points listed here should relate to each other as well as to the thesis.)
The thesis idea and each of these points may be combined with each map point to create your topic sentences:
A brief example of a thesis plus map points would be:
Cats make easy pets because they are independent, they bathe themselves, and they sleep all day.
The first topic sentence might be:
I enjoy having cats as pets because they are independent.
The second topic sentence might be:
Cats are easy to care for because they bathe themselves.
A third topic sentence might be:
The easiest pet to own are cats because they sleep all day.
You would develop each body paragraph with facts, examples, and details
The Conclusion should be one to three sentences. It should never start with In conclusion, as this is overused, cliche, and annoying. Find an original way to transition into it.
Your entire essay must be at least 400 words–more is better.
The Basics of all Good Writing
Focus: Narrowing down to one main point or idea. (The topic sentence does this for a paragraph; a thesis statement does this for an essay.). Think of a camera lens putting the object in question in the frame to the exclusion of all else.
Coherence: Having a logical order and flow. (Transitions can help one to achieve this.)
Unity: Sticking to one main point or idea. Think of a paragraph as a recipe. Everything that goes into it must contribute to it. For instance, I enjoy both apple pie and spaghetti sauce, but I do not wish to have apples in my spaghetti sauce nor garlic in my apple pie. It is, likewise, important to put only the correct selection of details to go with your particular paragraph or recipe of writing.
Development: Having an adequate number of details to support the one main point. All of the necessary details should be included just as we should put some sugar into spaghetti sauce to cut the acid of the tomatoes. Without it: acid reflux.
Vague Words: Avoid Using These:
Great
Good
Thing
Very
A lot
Big
Nice
as well as contractions.
