The purpose of this discussion is to practice writing about what you found in your critical reading of the text you are using for your textual analysis.
You need access to the source you will use for your textual analysis, and you need to have completed the critical reading of the source.
For this discussion, you will focus specifically on three concepts from the source you will use for your textual analysis: claims, subclaims and evidence.
These are the main objectives:
Find a source document/article using the Opposing Viewpoints database from the OCCC library https://libguides.occc.edu/home/articles You might have to sign in by using the same sign-in you use for moodle
You may also use an article from procon.org. Please be sure it's an article and not just a summary of the topic.
Another source you can use to find an article that will work for this assignment is https://www.opposingviews.com/
Post the URL (web address of the arrticle). Also, tell the author's name and the title of the article. Put the article title in quotations.
Example
"The fight for a liveable minimum wage has a powerful opponent: credit cards." America, vol. 225, no. 1, July 2021, p. 10. Gale In Context: Opposing Viewpoints, link.gale.com/apps/doc/A668945975/OVIC?u=okccc_main&sid=bookmark-OVIC&xid=d5b46dce.
Then, find the main claim in the article and list it. Tell what it is and what kind of claim it is. If the claim is not expressed (meaning it's not written out exactly) but you know the main point from reading the article, then put the claim in italics (that slanted writing). If the claim is expressed (meaning it's written out word-for-word), please put it in quotes.
Find two or three subclaims in the article and list them. Tell what each of them is and what kind they are. If the sub claim is not expressed (meaning it's not written out exactly) but you know the main point from reading the article, then put the claim in italics (that slanted writing). If the sub claim is expressed (meaning it's written out word-for-word), please put it in quotes.
Then, for each sub claim, summarize and cite and quote and cite some evidence that the author uses to supporte each subclaim. Be sure to tell what type of evidence it is.
Example outline:
1) "The fight for a liveable minimum wage has a powerful opponent: credit cards." America, vol. 225, no. 1, July 2021, p. 10. Gale In Context: Opposing Viewpoints, link.gale.com/apps/doc/A668945975/OVIC?u=okccc_main&sid=bookmark-OVIC&xid=d5b46dce.
2) The main claim is ******. This is a **(what type)*** claim.
3) The author then has two sub claims. The first is ******* This is a **(what type). The second sub claim is ********* This is a (what type) of sub claim. The author's third sub claim is ******* This is a *** (what type) *** of sub claim.
4) The author also uses much evidence to support his sub-claims.
For the first sub claim, which is *******, he uses (what kind of) evidence. The evidence is (then summarize what it is and cite.)
5) For the second sub claim, which is *******, he uses (what kind of) evidence. The evidence is (then summarize what it is and cite.)
Then you will reply to two students in the class by telling them if you agree that those seem to be the claims and sub-claims and if you believe the evidence supports each claim.
