Outline: Choose a specific environmental issue that interests you (e.g., ocean acidification,electronic waste, groundwater contamination). This can be a topic discussed in the course, or something else you are interested in.
Using the concepts and terms we have discussed throughout the course, explain the problem and its effects on different biotic and abiotic systems in the environment, including any related environmental issues that result from or interact with your chosen topic. Then suggest a few potential solutions to the problem.
For example, you might wish to write about agricultural pollution in a lake. To explain the scope of the problem, you could talk briefly about the paving over of wetlands to facilitate urban development (causing runoff and pollution), the overuse of industrial fertilizers, and the loss of lake species and biodiversity due to eutrophication. One solution offered may be to shift
industrial agricultural practices in the area to more sustainable approaches.
Please keep your written assignment to 4-5 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font. This is meant to be a brief but thorough summary of the problem, not a long essay. More importantly, it is meant to demonstrate that you can synthesize what you’ve learned in this course to explain a complex environmental issue and identify potential solutions.
Since much of the material you draw on should be from course lectures, there is no need for in-text citations for this summary. However, to acknowledge other sources (e.g., a scientificpublication or news article on eutrophication in Lake Winnipeg), please include a Bibliography section at the end of your summary referencing any additional sources.
