When conducting a literature review, the first approach is to define the research question. A research question helps lay the grounds for the research. There are different types of research questions depending on the analysis. The research question should be clear and specific. The specification of the research question gives the researcher an easy time defining the different variables involved. With a literature review, having a specific research question leads to a specific search area. Remember that literature review involves analyzing information from other sources. In our case, the research question is how to reduce hospital admissions for heart failure patients. With that in mind, the next step is to decide the scope of the review. Will the literature review analyze a specific demographic affected by heart failure? Do we need to know the cause of heart failure? Do we reduce heart failure admissions by sharing patients with other healthcare centers? The scope helps determine the channel for the literature review and the expected results (Munna, 2021).
Selecting the database for the literature review is another crucial step. There are different research done before that involve heart failure patient admissions. However, some will be more relevant as compared to others. Time and credibility are factors to consider in this step. For instance, research done thirty years ago may not be effective compared to two years ago. The factors causing heart failure might differ because of lifestyle changes (Munna, 2021). The next step involves keeping track of the searches done and the data collected. The effectiveness of the analysis will be determined by how effectively the search records were kept. It is wise to keep in mind that the structure of the literature review must be outlined in detail. With the above approach, it will be easy to define ways to decrease hospital admissions for heart failure patients.
Theoretical framework
The theoretical framework I would use with the above research is an inductive framework. The framework starts with data and then develops a hypothesis based on facts and patterns (Varpio, 2020). It would be easy to identify the pattern of hospital admission and then determine the causes and the solutions. The solutions will be based on a specific hypothesis.

As part of the quality improvement team on the medical surgical unit floor my job is to decrease hospital admission for heart failure. A few ways that I could guide patients into preventing heart failure would be to change or improve their diet, work on healthy ways to cope with stress factors in their life, and to make sure that a form of exercise is implemented into their routine. The steps that I will take to conduct a literature review would be to firstly, provide information about a study on heart failure and discuss their conclusion, recommendations, and education. Then I would implement new interventions, protocols, or policies to improve heart failure, and lastly I would create a question that could direct the new interventions, protocols, and policies in the hospital. The theoretical frameworks that could work well with my idea’s on improving heart disease in the medical-surgical floor would be, either middle range nursing theory or situation-specific nursing theory. A middle range nursing theory “contains a limited number of concepts and are focused on a limited aspect of reality” as stated in the Nursing Research: Methods and Critical Appraisal for Evidence-Based Practice e-book, and a situation-specific nursing theory is “more specific than middle range theories and are composed of limited number of concepts (pg 77)”. Looking at both theories side-by-side a situation-specific nursing theory would probably be the better choice because, the question is focused on decreasing hospital admission for heart failure on the medical-surgical unit floor, which is very specific as opposed to just saying “decreasing hospital admission for heart problems in the hospital” which is more broad and could entail anything from congenital heart problems to high blood pressure for anyone in the hospital.
