For your fiction essay, I want y’all to analyze the following question:
How does the conflict between the real (what their situation actually is) versus the ideal (what they
want the situation to be) manifest in two of the short stories that we have read.
Y’all should follow MLA style guidelines for the assignment, it needs to be 1500 words minimum, and
you are required to incorporate one scholarly (that is from GALILEO) source into your essay.
When doing research, don’t look for articles that have been published about the short stories; rather,
look for research that ties into what you will discuss in the stories themselves. For example, “Paul’s
Case” deals with questions of mental illness, a lack of belonging, etc. Your research should deal with
those issues instead of doing a title search on GALILEO and finding something someone else has already
written.
Remember, stick to the texts and what they say. If you claim something, you need to have evidence of
that in the text.
These are the short stories, I picked “The Landlady” by Dahl and “Paul Case” by Cather but
here are the rest of the stories you can write about if you feel like there is one that better suits you
“The Cask of Amontillado” Poe
“The Open Window” Munro (Saki)
“A Cup of Tea” Mansfield
“A Rose for Emily” Faulkner
“A Worn Path” Welty
“A Good Man is Hard to Find” O’Connor
Pick anyone story you feel will be the easiest to write about
