Hello! For your Week 7 writing, you have two options. If you have not watched the Week 7 video lecture, please do so before you complete your journal entry. 300 words minimum
Option 1: main quest
1) Summarize what the video lecture says about Eros, lack, and the quest pattern: how can we use these three terms to relate the story of Jason and the Argonauts to ancient Greek beliefs about the origin of the world?
2) Pick a non-ancient (i.e. modern) story: fictional, real, somewhere in between. Reduce the complexity of the story to a simple formula (story pattern), as we did with Jason and the Argonauts & Star Wars
-E.g. Star Wars = “In the many Star Wars movies and other media, a basic pattern is that a young person starts out by lacking knowledge of who s/he is and then the story eliminates this lack of knowledge as s/he learns who s/he really is”
3) Relate this story or narrative pattern to a belief or set of beliefs about the world that is/are prevalent today
-E.g. Star Wars = “the story pattern of Star Wars resembles a common belief in modern societies that when we start life, we don’t know who we *really* are, and our lives unfold as a search for who we *really* are”
-It does not have to be a belief you hold
-NOTE: YOU CANNOT DO STAR WARS (I’ve already done that one)
Option 2: side quest
1) Pick three shorter stories from the Week 7 reading
-Anything that happens before the Quest for the Golden fleece
-Anything that happens during the Quest, but is a distraction from or obstacle to the fulfillment of that quest
2) Summarize these stories in brief
3) Identify common elements between your three stories
-Do they share plot patterns?
-Are the characters related to each other?
-Do they have similar themes?
