Assignment Two đź’ˇ
PART 1: PLEASE POST BY TUESDAY, 30 APRIL
After reading some articles on cancel culture, accountability, and Rogerian structured arguments, create a meme and write a 450 word explanation.
- The meme is supposed to represent what you learned from the readings you’ve done so far. It is also supposed to help start developing ideas that could be potentially used when creating essay 4. To help focus the writing and develop ideas for the essay, please respond to the following questions in the explanation.
- For Cancel Culture and Accountability:
- What are the goals of cancel culture? What are the goals of being held accountable for one’s actions?
- How do people know when those goals have been met?
- Do people/posts/tweets have a right to be forgotten? When? Why?
- Two direct quotes from any of the readings to support your argument.
- For AI Use in Academic Writing (thanks, AR!):
- What are the pros of AI in academic writing? What are the cons of using AI in academic writing?
- How do people know when it’s okay to use AI in academic writing?
- Should AI be banned from all academic writing? Why?
- Two direct quotes from any of the readings to support your argument.
- For Cancel Culture and Accountability:
- Use a meme generator – memegenerator.com – for your creation.
- Post the image, not just the link, with the explanation. You will probably need to resize the image to make sure it fits and doesn’t take up a lot of space. Click on the picture icon in the above tool bar to embed and resize the image in the discussion.
PART 2: PLEASE RESPOND BY TUESDAY, 7 MAY
Please read the posts from your peers, and then respond in 150 words to two peers. Use the following questions for guidance:
- What you notice and value about your peer’s post.
- Identify a quote from your peer’s post that you would use in your summative assignment (a quote that your peer wrote, not a quote your peer used). Then explain why you chose that quote and how you would use it. Please cite that quote in-text citation in either APA or MLA format.
- Identify a next step for your peer. A next step could be another perspective, additional resource, and/or way to develop an idea present in the post.
TWO PEER RESPONSES:
- Ariela: Cancel culture and accountability are two similar concepts that have to do with holding people responsible for their actions, especially when those actions cause harm or damage to others. Cancel culturecan be seen as a form of social punishment, and it trys to challenge societal norms and power structures by calling out behavior that is deemed harmful to a community. Its goals include promoting accountability, empowering quieter voices and setting boundaries for behavior that is acceptable nad unacceptable. On the other hand, being held accountable for one’s actions includes acknowledging responsibility, reflecting on how one’s behavior affects others, and taking steps towards personal growth and change. The goals of accountability include promoting personal growth and change, repairing harm caused to individuals or communities, restoring trust, preventing future harm, and being more fairn. Determining when the goals of cancel culture or accountability have been met is difficult and often subjective. Important things to acknowledge include whether there has been genuine behavior change, whether harm has been addressed and repaired and how the affected communtes respond. Cancel culture and accountability both aim to point out harm and promote positive change, but they are different in how they approach and emphasize . Cancel culture seeks to challenge systemic issues and hold individuals socially accountable, while accountability focuses on personal growth, restitution, and justice. Both have important jobs in shaping societal norms and making a culture of responsibility and respect. In my meme you see a jesus figure thats labeled accepting and a person on their knees begging and theyre labeled Canceled person asking for forgiveness . This exemplifies how much greater the community is when they band together against bad and how the bad will eventually succumb.
- Victor Espinoza: The goals of cancel culture are to affect the people around you. Is to make an example of to society what is not tolerating what is tolerated. The goal of being held accountable is to make sure that society can see this is not a proper action to do. A tricky question is how do we know when the goals have been met It’s actually literally impossible To measure how far to go a great example is during the me too movement it’s almost an impossible amount of suffering to be accounted for And other people account for and haven’t spoken up yet. For sure if you want Harvey Weinstein removed from any power that he has and many make a new law that puts them on the predators list. To solve this and give a solution to this is a conundrum in itself because even the courts cannot solve this problem. Like Nicole an author from the University of Florida states like Nicole stated, “Cancel culture is needed to give a voice to the powerless like during the Harvey Weinstein case.” (1) In this way I believe cancel culture is needed in our society and sometimes can go even further. I personally believe Harvey Weinstein should not be forgotten but she remembered as a martyr to show what happens when people do these types of crimes holding him to account should be of upmost importance. Another form of council culture is when it is used to sells people who have a wrong opinion About a certain subject like Covid 19 Instead of canceling them explain to them situation and come to a meeting of minds. According to Renee Degroat, “the true test of a great leader is the influence that we have as a representative for positive change. We have to be willing to go through the process of leading others involved in making the change as it won’t happen overnight” (1) Realizing this By using the Rogarian Argument and theory In order to put yourself into somebody else’s shoes and explain the opposing view in your own words. The meme shows how cancel cultures use to defend the powerless such as women in the me too movement against Harvey Weinstein. Council culture has so many various definitions it’s hard to pinpoint all of them. As stated before this meme is straightforward and shows that cancel culture was the only way women could have the voices heard when it came to Harvey Weinstein. Harvey Weinstein has billions of dollars in the bank and hire the best lawyers therefore if the women decide to sue they will surely lose in court. Also the women might face retaliation from him and they can be dependent on their jobs so there are more inclined to put up with the sexual harassment. In reality what could women done in order to punish and stop the sexual harassment they were receiving. Which women historically going through in Hollywood. It is important to note that the me too movement started with Weinstein and it ended up helping woman in other sectors of Hollywood. Such as stunt doubles and extras which have received sexual harassment also. I would dare say Terry Crews actually got sexual harassed while being a 6 foot 3 muscular man and shows sexual harassment could even happen to such a powerful and Athletic man. Cancel culture and the me too movement has inspired others to speak up against their abuses and harassment. This form of protest making their voices heard on Twitter and is a great avenue and made their voices heard throughout the country. Me too can be seen as a form of activistism but just like everything else it could be a use and abused. Sometimes it go too far but this time its benefits and definitely helped out our society as a whole. In a sense Cancel culture is a form of excommunication just like it was done in the Catholic Church. Just like excommunication there has to be a discussion
