Working on a capstone project focused on prehospital blood administration, it’s important to distinguish between clinical and statistical significance, especially when evaluating the outcomes of our interventions. Statistical significance refers to the likelihood that the difference or relationship we observe in our data is not due to random chance and it’s usually determined through specific statistical tests that give us a p-value; a low p-value suggests that the observed effect is unlikely to have occurred by chance alone (Andrade, 2019). However, statistical significance does not always equate to a meaningful impact in a real-world clinical setting.
On the other hand, clinical significance addresses whether the change brought about by an intervention has a real, tangible impact on patient outcomes (Sharma, 2021). It’s about the practical importance or benefits that the intervention provides in the clinical setting. For instance, even a small improvement in the survival rates of patients receiving prehospital blood transfusions can be clinically significant if it means a better chance of recovery or reduced complications, even if these changes are not statistically significant.
In the capstone project, focusing on clinical significance means I look beyond just the numbers. If our intervention results in improved patient stabilization, faster recovery, or better trauma management, these outcomes are valuable even if they don’t all show statistical significance. By documenting and highlighting these clinically meaningful outcomes, we can support the positive impacts of my capstone project. This approach not only validates the importance of this project but also helps in advocating for broader implementation and support from healthcare stakeholders.
