Assignment # 1
3 – 2 – 1 Reading Assignment
Rationale: An important element of reading comprehension is the ability to summarize text. Summarizing requires readers to focus on the major elements of a text and to decide what is important. When reading longer texts, this strategy helps readers by allowing them to review what they read in one part before moving on to the next.
Steps: The idea is to summarize some key ideas, rethink them in order to focus on those that one is most intrigued by, and then pose a question that can reveal where understanding is still uncertain.
Identify and write about 3 things you learned from the chapter. Give enough information in your answer to demonstrate you understand the concept or idea.
Identify and write about 2 interesting concepts or ideas from the chapter. Give enough information in your answer to demonstrate you understand the concept or idea.
Create 1 question you have about the information you read about in the chapter. You will use this question for assignment #2 each week.
Example:
- 3 Things I Learned:
- I learned that RTI helps identify students who are struggling in a particular subject area. RTI is a pre-referral intervention strategy used by teachers to identify struggling students and implement remediation strategies that will assist the students in progressing in areas of difficulty.
- I learned that there are 8 key principles of IDEA, they are: 1)zero reject- no child many be denied services if identified as needing special education services; 2) manifest determination- no child may be suspended for more than 10 days due to his/her disability; 3) parental involvement-parents have access to all of their child’s records and must give permission for the child to participate in special education classes; 4) IEPs are required- all students identified with a disability must have an Individual Education Plan (IEP); 5) non-discriminatory evaluations- once referred every child has the right to a non-discriminatory evaluation-this evaluation must include: a hearing and vision screening, an IQ test, an achievement test, a behavioral evaluation/observation, and data collection of classwork, and absentee record; 6) the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) must be chosen for placement purposes-with the general education classroom placement as the first choice; 7) due process-if for any reason a parent feels services are not rendered or appropriate they may institute due process proceedings and have their case reviewed by a judge; 8) Free appropriate public education (FAPE); IDEA guarantees that each child with a disability, eligible for special education, will be entitled to a free appropriate public education.
I learned that there are two major tenants for a student to qualify for special education services: one identification of a disability must be established and two, that disability must impact the child’s education in an adverse manner.
2 Interesting things I learned from the chapter:
I had no idea that there was such an increase in students with Autism. There has been an increase of about 1,700% in the last decade. There doesn’t seem to be an answer for this increase, but several ideas were suggested in the chapter. One reason for the increase may be because doctors are getting better at identifying autism, a second reason may be because many students who were previously diagnosed as having an intellectual disability may now be classified as autistic.
I found it interesting that the deinstitutionalization has caused a sore in the homeless population. Although a good thing in the scheme of things, this has left many people with disabilities and mental illness with no place to go for help.
1 Question I still have is:
- I still do not understand why students with ADD are not served under IDEA? How are they served and who is responsible for identifying them?
