EVNT2020: Directed Work Project Instructions Purpose The purpose of the Directed Work Project (DWP) is to gain experience in the Events industry. To complete this project, you must volunteer at an event of your choice during this term or have worked at a recent event within the last six months. The outcome of this project is determined by the event choice. You will need access and/or information to a contact person within the organization to complete this project. Description 1. For this project, you should expect to spend a minimum of 3-5 hours working (and/or planning) an event of your choosing during the term. The event must be worked on and completed during the term. 2. You must complete the DWP approval form so that your professor can approve the event site. 3. The paper must be submitted in proper MLA format. Spelling and grammar errors will result in point deductions. 4. Papers must be submitted through Ulearn/Blackboard 5. See below for individual section content you should expect to include. Section I: Introduction 1. Provide a brief history or review of the event or event office. 2. Explain the purpose and philosophy of the event (not-for-profit or for-profit). 3. Provide an agenda or schedule of the event activities. 4. Describe the event planning team. Section II: Event Research 1. Were any Research or Assessment tools utilized? Examples of this may include questionnaires, last year’s evaluations, or surveys. Do you have demographics for the population attending the event? 2. Submit a SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat) analysis of the event. JWU1001 College of Online Education Johnson & Wales University Section III: Developing the Event Plan 1. Why was this event site selected? 2. Does the venue match the event? Why or Why not? 3. Are there any ADA concerns or accommodations? 4. What is the theme of the event? (Remember: themes can come from many sources, such as history, regions, or popular culture). 5. Were there any amenities (something extra that enhances the event) used to communicate the theme? 6. What suggestions would you make to improve the effectiveness of the theme? Section IV: Financial Implications 1. Discuss the sources of revenue for the event (admission fees, sponsorships, registration, product sales etc.) 2. What are the fixed and/or variable expenses for the event? 3. Note: If you do not have access to this information, use resources that provide you with similar information (for example, the ticket price, amount that the entertainment would cost, and the estimated cost of food and beverages served). Section V: Marketing and Promotion 1. Discuss the marketing and promotional efforts used by the organization or the event manager. Were there any mailings and/or brochures, posters, or social media promotions? 2. Identify all of the event sponsors. (These are usually listed on the event brochure and/or on signs throughout the venue). 3. Was there a sponsorship package? What type of sponsorship agreements were entered into and what benefits did sponsors receive in return for their support? Section VI: Event Reflection 1. Fully describe your duties and role at the event. 2. Evaluate the event as a learning experience. What went well and what would you suggest to improve the experience? 3.
