Exploratory Writing Assignment #2 The “Akedah”

There are ways in which the Akedah have been discussed by rabbinical scholars and Jewish writers over the past two and a half millennia. From a story of an awe-inspiring display of faith, the story of a devoted father who had no choice but to sacrifice his only son to the focus on Isaac as the first Jewish martyr. In this week’s readings, we trace = the historical ways that Jews related to and wrote about the Akedah (e.g. Chronicles of the Crusades). In this essay (500-750 words), focus on the following objectives:

• Analyze the various ways in which the Akedah (the binding of Isaac) has been perceived as a source of merit for the Jewish people throughout history.
• Explore the three main motifs presented: Abraham’s insight, divine orchestration, and the invocation of the Akedah by the Jewish people themselves.
• Discuss how these interpretations reflect different theological and cultural contexts within Judaism, and evaluate their significance in shaping Jewish identity and religious practice.
• Examine the impact of major twentieth-century events, such as the Holocaust and the establishment of the State of Israel, on Jewish interpretations of the Akedah.
• Discuss how these historical contexts influenced diverse attitudes towards the Akedah, including reverence, cynicism, and critique.
• Consider the ways in which these attitudes interacted and evolved over time, and evaluate their implications for contemporary Jewish thought and practice.
