Applied Decision Methods Discussion 5
Andy Grove discusses in an article on the 3-minute egg. Andy Grove was the past Chairman and CEO of Intel. This example Grove offers, represents a simplified example of what PERT or CPM are trying to imply when using its procedures.
What are Bottlenecks? States INTEL Past CEO Andy Grove, they may not be what they seem at first, Grove stated in this example of the 3-minute egg. Project Management Objectives: When you complete this module, you should be able to:
?Apply PERT and CPM to plan, monitor, and control projects.
?Determine critical path and project lengths.
?Reduce the project time using project crashing.
“TOY Problems” help build a student’s understanding of complex math or statistical studies that you will learn in our class. A “Toy Problem relates to a simplified model that may be real or imagined but offers students a foundation on how the models they are working with, work.
This model is below referred to as a Toy problem in which
The idea of Bottlenecks began with Andy Grove who discussed in EGGS 101 how long it took to make the perfect breakfast. Much of this simple idea can be thought of looking at both PERT and CPM which is an important part of a Project Managers job. The idea is how much time does it take to create the ideal breakfast to a cup of coffee, toast and a boiled egg. Andy decided to arrange the times in an order flow diagram like the one below.
BOIL EGG 3 minutes __________________________ Toast 1 minute__________________ Cup of Coffee 20 seconds and grab the tray and serve
The idea here of creating this simple breakfast to Grove is simply that boiling the egg that takes the longest time in creating a breakfast meal of 3 minutes which represents the bottleneck in a simple PERT or CPM model. This 3-minute egg idea, has in a simple way its relevance and it helps us understand what a Project Managers job entails in creating products either on time. According to Andy whether we are working on creating circuit boards, a construction project or an assembly line in a plant.
What is interesting here is that Grove gets us set up to think that the 3-minute egg is taking all of the time. Let’s suppose what if we could boil 24 eggs in one pot but our toaster only yields 4 slices of toast at one time. Now how does our bottleneck change. At first glance the egg seemed to be the problem but if the toaster can only toast 4 pieces of bread then the waiter can only serve 4 people breakfast or 4 times each 3 minutes which equals 12 pieces of bread per customer. But in this case, we still have 12 eggs in reserve waiting for the toaster to catch up. So, what Andy suggests is that it is not the egg but the toast that keeps the waiter from delivering 24 customer meals every 3 minutes. So, to keep up with the boiling 24; 3-minute eggs the firm must buy another toaster to now have 24 slices of toast ready to create breakfasts of 24 diners who enter the café.
The Bottleneck is not the EGG but with the New Formula below we need to Buy another TOASTER to Eliminate a Bottleneck. Or 12 x 2 Toasters = 24 slices
Toast 1 minute 3 minutes x4 slice toaster = 12×2 Toasters 24-slices_____BOIL EGG 24 eggs in 3 minutes ____ 24 Cup of Coffee 20 seconds and serve
Another idea of Groves let’s say it isn’t the toaster but it is the 3-minute egg was took the longest time to make. Therefore, finding ways to cash the egg boiling time of some long time periods maybe such as microwaving the egg in 1 minute. The ideas here can be applied both to PERT and Critical Path Methodologies. These are examples of the job that Projects Managers due to save companies time to get jobs completed on time or as fast as possible.

After reading the Announcement on the 3-minute egg breakfast and how the 1 variable seems to take the longest time to create a bottleneck in the designing of a quick breakfast. You probably heard the adage. “That time is Money”. How this 3-minute egg breakfast related within so many industries. Explain a business that you know of as to how PERT and CPM are used. Also, how is this 3-minute egg example related to PERT and CPM planning and the underlying job that is required by firms to hire a Project Manager to reduce the time it takes to timely towards the completion of projects?
How do you think of you knowing PERT and CPM can help your career and offer you a better understanding of how construction teams, manufacturers and even sports teams can use these models to be of great benefit a team or a firm, become more profitable?
