Writing Question
*NOTE: these should be done twice as if two students wrote them*
(Assignment 1) Hazards and Safety
In this thought experiment, we are going to investigate a public safety topic related to a physical geography process. This PSA (public safety announcement) is to inform folks about how to be safe and react to a natural hazard such as earthquakes, wildfires, tsunamis, hurricanes, extreme heat, flooding, blizzards, rockfalls, or any other hazards of your choice. Check out our resources to get inspiration or information on a topic. The Disasters Portal from NASALinks to an external site. has some really cool maps and information.
This will be a blind discussion post so you can choose any topic. You will have to post before you see other students posts. You are not required to reply, but I strongly encourage checking out what to do in these hazards, especially if someone has done a hazard different from yours!
You must answer:
Where does this hazard happen?
Why does it happen here? What geophysical process causes it to happen?
We may not have covered your topic and that’s okay! Just give some very basic information. Even if we have covered your topic, we are interested in preparing for hazards, predictions, communication, technology, and safety so we don’t need a detailed summary. A small summary is fine.
Any safety information. Apps to download? What to do when it happens? How should people prepare? Go bag? Flashlights? Gear? etc.
You do not have to answer the following questions, but they are here to help guide you in your research. You should aim to answer at least 3 more questions in your poster; whatever is most relevant to your topic.
Is there any warning system for this hazard? What is it?
Seismic monitoring, satellite monitoring?
- Is it predictable? Who is predicting it? Where do we get that information?
- How much warning time do people have? Days, minutes?
How has technology advanced predications or safety in this field?
- How do people stay informed about this hazard?
- Is a particular population (young, old) more vulnerable or what locations (e.g. Tornados aren’t in Alaska ) are at a higher risk?
Is it seasonal? What time of year for which hemisphere?
What tools or instruments measure these hazards?
- What agency is reporting the responsible for information or managing the hazard?
Post:
- A 1 page or poster about your hazard. You can use PowerPoint or Word to make some graphics or add some photos. If you would like to draw or create a physical poster and scan it in, go for it! I also suggest using CanvaLinks to an external site. if you would like to try an easy creative tool.
- Use short sentences or phrases.
- Illustrate when possible or add a map and point to vulnerable locations
- Use lists or bullet points
- Make sure to provide a list of sources. This can just be the websites posted along with your poster. You do not have to cite, but you do need to tell me where you got your information.
- (Assignment 2) Lesson 16: Glacial Processes and Terrain
- Watch this video on a glacier almost in your own backyard.
- List and define at least 5 glacial features described verbally in the video. Include the time in the video that it was referenced.
- Check out USGS Earthshots- Glaciers. Choose 1 glacier and tell me about it.
Give me the link to your glacier
What type of glacier is it?
Tell about the change over time you see in the imagery. Give 1-2 sentences and include timestamps such as in 1985 this glacier had this much ice coverage and these features versus 2020 which is….
Identify 3 features around your glacier. List them here with a description.
How do glaciers move and what are their effects?
Lesson 17: Weathering & Karst Formations
- We have a mass wasting problem on Hwy 1 in San Mateo County. Do some research on “Devil’s Slide.” Tell me the problems and solutions found on this part of the Pacific Coast Highway.
- What is the relationship between gravity and mass wasting in 2 sentences.
- Explain in 1 paragraph water’s influence on mechanical and chemical weathering.
What is exfoliation and what is the most widely accepted explanation about how it works?
What is the relationship between oxidation and rust? What is happening?
What is the driest and fastest type of mass wasting?
