Locate five (5) new articles (i.e., not used in a previous assignment) related to your topic that use theory to guide the research being presented. Clearly describe 1) the major concepts identified in the theoretical explanation, 2) any assumptions underlying those concepts, and 3) the relationship between those concepts. Next, write a short essay explaining your topic from each of the four major theoretical frameworks in sociology. It is acceptable to cite explanations that are presented in existing research. However, if an explanation is borrowed from another author, verbatim or paraphrase d, use proper citation techniques. It is not acceptable to use articles discussed in the textbook for this assignment. Note: To explain your topic from a theoretical framework, focus on the assumptions and key concepts associated with the framework. For example, the key concepts associated with the functionalist framework are system, equilibrium, dysfunction, function, and division of labor. A functionalist explaining the enduring existence of poverty might argue that poverty serves an important function in society. It ensures that somebody will be available to do the undesirable jobs in society, it motivates members of society to strive to achieve so that they do not become poor, and it provides jobs other members of society (e.g., police, corrections personnel, social workers, human services workers, etc.). If explaining why people are poor, a functionalist might argue that the division of labor consist of jobs that are all important, but that some are more important than others. To ensure that the most qualified people get the most important jobs, the more important jobs require personal investment (e.g., education, family resources, training, networking, etc.). Therefore, people are poor because they do not do what is required to succeed. The exact application of a theoretical explanation is dependent on the author, but the author’s argument must be consistent with the theory (i.e., assumptions and key concepts). This assignment is designed to help you develop SHORT coherent theoretical explanations for your topic, and to help you better recognize theory (or the absence of theory) in the literature you consume.
