Listen (multiple times!) and use the questions to guide your essay. Do not simply answer the questions. Describe what you hear in the piece. You may organize by what order you hear things in, by concept related to the entire piece, or however you like, but make sure it makes sense in the progression of your essay.

Topics to consider (you do not have to address all of these):
Key: Major or minor? (Hint: if you aren’t sure, look at the name of the symphony ?)

Dynamics
Instruments/Tone Color
Rhythm
Melody/harmony
Texture

Guiding questions (you should address a minimum of one of these in your essay):
1. How does the piece change when the winds enter after the strings-only introduction? How are the string and wind sections used through this piece?

2. How are dynamics used to influence the mood or sound of certain sections of the piece?

3. Can you figure out where the large sections of the piece are – this is Sonata form. Does the character of the music change, or does specific musical material return?
