Education & Teaching Question
THE ASSIGNMENT: Please write a one-page essay consisting of three paragraphs. You should double-space and type in Times New Roman, size 12 font. THE TOPICS (CHOOSE ONE): 1) Choices and Consequences We are all forced to make choices, some we want to make and others we do not. However, all too often we find ourselves at a crossroads – we must make a change – and we are worried about the outcome. Read this short, familiar poem by Robert Frost: “The Road Not Taken.”Links to an external site. In this poem, the traveler has come to a fork in the road, and he must go right or left. The problem is that neither path gives him much information, and he is worried he will choose the wrong one. As he examines the paths, he notices that they are about the same (see lines 6, 10, and 11). The path he is choosing is symbolic of our lives; we all come to a fork in the road, and we must choose. However, there is some small comfort in the fact that no matter which choice we make, each path will contain mostly the same elements – some joy, some heartache, some troubled times, some easy times, etc. Therefore, all choices have consequences, and we will never know the full outcomes of the choices we make today until later. TOPIC: Discuss a time you had to make a decision without all the facts. How did it make you feel? Was the outcome of your choice good or bad? Why? How did this choice impact your future choices? 2) Bullying We are all familiar with this topic. Bullying is defined as “seeking to harm, intimidate, or coerce (force) someone who is perceived as vulnerable.” In fact, we all know someone who was bullied, we may have been bullied ourselves at some point, or we could have even been the one doing the bullying. Watch this short clip from the Disney movie Wreck It RalphLinks to an external site.. In this clip, Ralph is the “bad guy” in the Fix It Felix video game, but he is actually a gentle, friendly fellow. Because of his role in the game, the other characters do not like him, and they belittle, ridicule, and ostracize him. Ralph is lonely, and he tries to make friends with the others; however, they bully him into smashing their cake. After this incident, Ralph flees the video game, and the game is marked “Out of Order,” meaning the other characters are out of a job. They eventually realize how much they need Ralph, and they attempt to bring him back to the game. Notice how there is a ring-leader of sorts in the game, one who does most of the bullying. The other characters do not stand up for Ralph or attempt to make the ring-leader stop. TOPIC: Discuss a time you either witnessed a bully or were bullied yourself. Did you stand up for yourself or for someone else? Why or why not? How did it make you feel? Did this incident change your outlook on others? 3) Grief and Loss This is another topic with which we are familiar. We have all lost loved ones, and once we experience that loss, we are usually changed in some way. Listen to this song by Sean “Puff Diddy” Combs and Faith Evans titled “I’ll Be Missing You.”Links to an external site. Written after Notorious B.I.G was shot and killed, Combs reflects on his friend, the time they spent together, and the history of their friendship. He uses the song to express his hope that they will be reunited one day. His song is universal; we can all relate to it. When we lose someone we love, we tend to think back on our memories with that person and the parts of their life that we carry with us as we continue living. Also, as we work through the grieving process, time seems to split – we are one person before that person’s death, and who we are changes in some way after they are gone. We mark time in increments of before their passing and after their passing. TOPIC: Discuss a time you lost someone you loved. How did you handle your grief? How did their death change you? How are you different now from then? What elements of that person’s character do you try to embody as you age?
