Substance use can have a negative impact on all aspect of your life. Learn more about the physical, emotional and financial effects of substance use.

physical effects

• The risk of overdose. When you use a substance in excess, you may experience an “overdose” or “high” that can lead to death. Overdoses are most likely when someone takes more than they think they should and then takes something else that has been mixed with the drug.

• The chance of contracting diseases from using substances like heroin, cocaine and marijuana. These diseases include HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C virus (HCV), tuberculosis (TB) and other infections like syphilis or chlamydia.[1]

• Increased chance of injury if you drive while intoxicated or ride a motorcycle while under the influence of alcohol.[2] Alcohol also impairs judgment[3], which could cause other accidents on the roadways as well as off-road vehicles such as ATVs.[4] Studies have shown that driving under the influence can increase your chances for getting into an accident by about 30 percent over sober drivers.[5] If you do drive after drinking too much alcohol, make sure not only yourself but also those around them know how drunk they are before setting out on a journey!

• Friends and family members may leave because they don’t want anything else from you; this means less support from loved ones and fewer chances to blend in socially because they no longer know what else is possible beyond being a “user.”
