A SOAP is a rhetorical guide that helps the writer to grasp the precise nature of a writing assignment. For this assignment, your SOAP can be broken down as follows:

This assignment should be at least 1-2 pages in letter format. You are tasked with writing a letter to either a relative of Rodney King, Matthew Shephard, or a Holocaust victim. Your letter could also be to a political leader. It is your choice. Or your letter could be to Rodney King, Matthew Shephard, or a Holocaust survivor. Here are some guidlines to follow as you compose your letter.

• The Holocaust 

Each of these cases involves a hate crime/violence and a violation of human rights. You should familiarize yourself with the resources and then compose a letter. Your letter should be single spaced, broken into multiple paragraphs, and thoughtful in nature. 

Your letter can be directly to Rodney King, Matthew Shephard, or a victim/survivor of the Holocaust. If you choose this audience, your letter should acknowledge the pain and suffering that the person experienced and offer ways that you, as an individual, will work to make the world a better place. This letter should not only recount the pain/suffering but it should acknowledge how their human rights were violated and offer ways that you could live in a way to uphold and protect the human rights that were violated.

Another option — your letter can be relatives/family of Rodney King, Matthew Shephard, or victim/survivor of Holocaust. Again, this letter should acknowledge the hate crime/violence that was experienced and how human rights were violated. In this letter, you can offer your condolences for the loss they experienced and what you have learned. How has the hate crime you chose made you look at the world differently? Changed your perspective? Encouraged you to live differently in a way to uphold/protect human rights.

Finally, one more option — your letter can be to a political figure. Again, the letter should recount what happened –whether to Rodney King, Matthew Shephard, or a victim/survivor of the Holocaust. However, the letter should plead for government intervention to prevent such atrocities from happening in future. Your request of the leader should be specific and professional. This isn't a complaint letter but a constuctive and thoughtful request of leadership to make important changes to uphold human rights.
